A few minutes ago the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) had their televised press conference where Dakota Fanning, Tim Allen, and Susan Kelechi Watson announced the nominations for the 2020 edition of these infamous awards that always generate controversy because what is drama and what is comedy but always give TV audiences with a great show -many times more entertaining than the Oscars show- and this year's show has to be hilarious as Ricky Gervais will host again (his fifth time) the ceremony on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at 8:00pm ET broadcast live from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on NBC and many TV stations around the world. Great!
As was previously announced this edition Golden Globe Ambassadors are Dylan and Paris Brosnan, sons of Pierce Brosnan and will honor Tom Hanks with the Cecil B. deMille Award and Ellen DeGeneres with the newly created Carol Burnett Award.
Making awards history, Netflix secured its first-ever Golden Globes best picture nominations for not one but four of its films, The Irishman, Marriage Story, The Two Popes, and Dolemite is My Name plus landed a total of 17 nominations, more than double that of its nearest rival.
Marriage Story leads with six (6) nominations followed by The Irishman and Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood with five (5) each.
After reading the nominations -on TV was too-fast for me to digest all the info- and also reading the TV nominations my first spontaneous reaction is that awards show is going to be CRAZY and yes, very-crowded with A-Listers, Movie Stars, Celebrities, et al. As TV series casting now include outstanding film actors it's in awards shows like this one where they all collide, share the red carpet elbow-to-elbow and gee, this edition will be monstrous; just from film nominees include Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Renée Zellweger, Saorise Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Annette Bening, Kathy Bates, Laura Dern, Margot Robbie, Jennifer Lopez, and Emma Thompson; add Television nominees and we also have, Olivia Colman, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Kristen Dunst, Helen Mirren, Michelle Williams, Patricia Arquete, Helena Bonham-Carter, Toni Collette and none other than Meryl Streep! ... and these are only the actresses! Oops, was forgetting that also Taylor Swift and Beyoncé will be there as well as Sir Elton John.
Group nominations somehow can be called "traditional" as tend to honor mainly American and/or English-language films which has been okay but now it's not in line with what respected east and west coast film critics' are doing when including non-English films too. Of course, Cannes Palm d'Or winner Parasite has nominations in Foreign-language, director and screenplay -can't qualify for best film, remember Roma last year?- but there is no other film being honored, not even I Lost My Body in animation much less Portrait of a Lady on Fire in cinematography as this group doesn't honor the category(!). Hope Oscars behave not like Globes as this is their opportunity to open the awards beyond the traditional, when several non-English movies have done very good at the American box office, with audiences and with film critics. Oops! also with one nomination outside foreign-language, Pain and Glory.
As many are claiming to the wind, and I tend to agree- this year there was no female director nominations and the biggest snubb for me is Greta Gerwig but then also Noah Baumbach as believe both deserve more the nominations than Mendes, Phillips, Tarantino and even Scorsese, sigh.
There are quite a few tweets reminding all #GoldenGlobes buzz and fuzz that nominations are decided by 90 members of the Hollywood foreign press (no Americans here) and continue to say things like "It's not your peers, it's not objective, it's not a representative cross-section, it's not reflective of pretty much anything. It's 90 people and a fun party". Well, yes and no. No, because Hollywood foreign press are entertainment journalists, i.e. film critics and entertainment reporters; they absolutely represent what foreign film critics living in America (i.e. Hollywood) think about the annual films, just like any other film critic group in America that say what they think and represent film critics. Period. Yes, because is a very-fun party!

Best & Worst TV Series 2019 Year-End Review
Best of 2019
I watched eighty TV seasons and mini-series this year. Here are my top 11 for the year. I didn't watch any seasons that fell into the 'worst' category this year. This is based simply on what I watched this year, not on what was released this year.
Check out the previous year-end reviews.
The Top 11 of 2019:
The Umbrella Academy (2019-)

Watch The Umbrella Academy on Netflix

Rated: TV-MA

Plot
A disbanded and dysfunctional family of superheroes reunite after their adoptive father, who trained them to save the world, dies.
Verdict
This show has a great vibe. It's the end of the world, but the siblings are busy arguing with each other. That's the tone of this show, comedy against a dire backdrop. The story is engrossing with mysteries and reveals in equal measure. Be forewarned, this does end on a big cliff hanger. Most of the characters are well developed. The stylized production is really well done and the soundtrack is simply amazing. I rarely binge a show non-stop, but I couldn't stop watching this.

Plot
In the mid 23rd Century, the Earth Alliance space station Babylon 5, located in neutral territory, is a major focal point for political intrigue, racial tensions, and various wars over the course of five years.
Verdict
What this show does is so impressive. It's like a novel in how the first seasons setup the great war while still developing these characters. It's a space opera and I mean that as a compliment. It's a broad story that balances a galactic war with characters that grow and develop almost every episode. This tackles tough issues, and it's hard not to like these characters by the end. Their personal journeys are so intriguing and they change so much by the close of the show. The writing is top notch.
At first I thought this was a knock-off Star Trek, quitting half way into the first episode, but I went back and it becomes so much more, telling a story much bigger than Star Trek ever managed. This show is so entirely underrated.

Plot
A mockumentary on a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, and tedium.
Verdict
I really thought this show might not be as good as I remembered or the first season would be bland, but from the beginning this show is so funny. A big part of it is that I can relate. I work in an office. Few shows make me laugh as much as this show.
While it does lose some appeal once the story gets broader, I forgot Jim and Pam were a thing from the beginning. A lot of plot points I thought happened after the show started declining were there early on.
The series has a normal that it drifts from and comes back to. I didn't like when Jim transferred, but that doesn't last long. Season 4 is the first time I checked the time on an episode to see when it would end. It's the episode where Michael drives into a lake.
It really is one of the funniest shows, with these disparate personalities interacting and reacting This is at it's best when things are just slightly awkward. There's a great understated hilariousness to that and the show lost that as Michael did increasingly dumber things. Once Michael left, it was never quite the same.
While this lasted nine seasons, I only watched the first four in this session.
Love, Death & Robots (2019-)
Season 1 - 18 episodes (2019)
Watch Love, Death & Robots Season 1 on NetflixCreated by: Tim Miller

Plot
In this animated anthology series for adults, the shorts span the genres of science fiction and fantasy to horror and comedy while presenting a variety of animation formats from traditional 2D to photo-real 3D CGI. Each segment is about ten minutes long, created by different teams of filmmakers from around the world.
Verdict
This is a fun watch. Each ten minute episode provides a quick idea, some only half an idea, but I loved every bit of it. Even the episodes I didn't like as much, are over soon enough. Some of the CGI is just crazy good. There are a lot of episodes that are really neat. Even if you aren't a fan of sci-fi, this isn't always heavy on the science. I like that this isn't a show that asks me to remember a lot or watch a dozen episodes for a conclusion. It's easy, fun, and I want more. This contains eighteen unique ideas, and some of these worlds are ripe to be revisited. I hope this gets a second set of stories.

Plot
Bret and Jemaine are Flight of the Conchords, a folk-rock band from New Zealand living in New York City in search of stardom.
Verdict
I'm a big fan of What We Do in the Shadows, and this has been on my watch list for a long time. This is very indie with the band breaking into song at least once an episode. The humor is understated, but very clever. In the first episode they sing a song about a girl "so beautiful [she] could be a waitress" or "a part time model."
I love how subtle the humor is. It's ridiculous, but the actors downplay it. You could miss it if you aren't paying attention. Rhymnocerus and Hiphopotamus are amazing rap names.
It's great in the way it presents humor and the songs as well. Very enjoyable, very funny.
Chernobyl (2019)
Mini-series - 5 episodes
Watch the trailer
Created by: Craig Mazin
Starring: Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson
Rated: TV-MA
Plot
In April 1986, an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics becomes one of the world's worst man-made catastrophes.
Verdict
From the very start of this series I loved it. It's an amazing story that's true. That fact gives this an extra impact. The production design is fantastic, the directing is effective, and the writing that serves as the foundation is excellent. It's absolutely amazing and a must watch. It follows the Chernobyl disaster from the beginning through the perspective of a scientist and bureaucrat. The series does everything right, presenting this story while also urging the viewer to do their own research. While Chernobyl is an incredible event, this series does an incredible job of portraying that story. I watched each episode as it aired, and watched a second time before the next episodes. That's how good this is.

Plot
A detective recruits his Uber driver into an unexpected night of adventure.
Verdict
It's an able comedy that delivers a lot of action. You get what's advertised, an odd couple buddy cop movie. Bautista is the macho muscle while Nanjiani delivers deadpan retorts. This is an above average comedy that's a pretty easy watch.
It depends.
Review
Bautista plays Vic Manning the macho cop who doesn't cry while Nanjiani plays Stu. A stereotypical modern man that isn't afraid to show any amount of emotion. They are thrown together when Vic needs Uber due to eye surgery and then must catch a drug dealer before it's too late.
It was clear glasses were going to be an issue with Vic wearing glasses and constantly adjusting them. I have to wonder how it never came up in all his years as an officer. Maybe he's getting older and just started needing glasses.
The setup is pretty standard. Vic gets eye surgery to correct his vision and can't see. His daughter shows him the Uber app and that's when Stu comes it. Stu is desperate to get a five star review. There are lots of jokes based on Vic's ignorance of Uber.
There's great chemistry between the leads. If you've seen Nanjiani anywhere else then you're used to his usual style of humor. I appreciate that his character has a bit of depth to his character. He wants to end this Uber ride so he can see a woman that he really likes. Vic is supposed to go to his daughter's art show, but instead is chasing a criminal.
Vic is emotionally distant while Stu embraces his feelings. Of course they both change each other for the better, developing a camaraderie during their adventure. For most of the night Stu is out of his depth, asked to chase criminals and hold a firearm.
They make each other better. This is a silly movie, but it's an easy watch.

Is this the greatest movie ever made? Yes.
It's the epitome of film. It does everything a movie should while exploring an unknown world. It's expansive & sprawling, creating riveting characters with a smart script, and the dialog is sharp.
We delve into this world of crime and it feels real because it focuses on the characters. It's a family drama with high stakes.

A young blade runner's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former blade runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.
Verdict
This an engrossing movie that builds upon every thing Blade Runner (1982) did. While it completely stands on it's own, seeing the original adds a lot of value. I like the way the mystery and revelations unfold better in this as it focuses on what purpose and meaning add to life. This isn't just asking what it means to be human, but what it means to be alive.
You could freeze any frame and have a gorgeous image. Care and detail is apparent in every aspect of this film, and the world just feels bigger as we explore outside of L.A. too. As I watched this I thought surely it can't be better than the original, but I have to conclude it is. I did just see the original too so this isn't recency bias. 2049 is a fantastic movie that manages to expand on the themes of the original while not being a copy. It's approach is completely engrossing and unique.

Verdict
Episode V is much darker than Episode IV, but it has a focus on action that keeps the pacing tight. I like it more than IV because it also firmly establishes the characters and their motivations while correcting some of the shortcomings. The characters have a real sense of fear and the tension remains high.
There are more than a few iconic scenes and lines of dialog. The creativity and craft of Star Wars is always impressive. The designs of the machines and characters endure as does the imprint of this series. This is the rare sequel that surpasses the original. It also looks good, the cinematography is a step above, and it should be. There are some great sets to see.

I love this comedy. It's clever, witty, and just fun. The humor is British, subtle, and multi layered while being endlessly quotable. It's a spoof of action movies that pokes fun at the usual tropes before embracing many of those same tropes. The detail is incredible. Almost all of the jokes have a pay off when they're made and later in the movie. If you haven't seen this, you should. For the greater good.

This is such an awesome movie. From the melding of sci-fi and action to the aesthetics and concepts. The movie has numerous iconic scenes from the dojo to the lobby, rooftop rescue, and the subway fight.
What is real? That's a question that pervades the movie and asks the audience to question their own perceptions. Real is just a feeling, something we tell ourselves.
You've probably seen this movie a few times, but there is a lot of foreshadowing. The movie follows the rule of cool, but in a construct that completely works. It's smart, the action is amazing, and it's still engaging.

This is simply an amazing film from the Coen brothers. Every part of it works in tandem. The cinematography, lighting, music, story, and acting are all superb. Oscar Isaac is one to watch. The soundtrack becomes the star of the film, and it is even more impressive that Isaac performed the music live during the scenes. The beginning and ending overlay and work well together. This movie is incredible. The script is amazing and the acting is sublime. It's such an incredibly well made movie where everything comes together so well. I regret I didn't see it in the theater. I want to rewatch immediately, but at nearly three hours that's not so easy. The last hour wasn't quite as good as the first, with a few decisions I found odd. While Kaji is against the war, he is afraid to conscientiously object. He avoids being drafted initially, but then is forced into boot camp and then the travesties of war. In the field, Kaji leads a group of civilians and soldiers, eventually captured as a POW.
Verdict
The Human Condition is a trilogy totaling ten hours. It's a bit long for a movie, veering into mini-series territory. Yes this is in black and white, yes it has subtitles, with that said it's still very good, and it doesn't seem dated. Itfocuses on characters and the story. Kaji's morals get in the way and make life more difficult. It would be easy to give in, but Kaji doesn't. He wants to treat even his enemies like humans.
It probes some of the same questions as Full Metal Jacket, the duality of man, peace, war, love, and brutality. I prefer Part II over the first, and the third is just heartbreaking and much darker. The writing and story of the trilogy is amazing, creating a compelling experience.

The scope and scale of this movie is mesmerizing in of itself, twelve years in the making. The problem with movies that capture the passage of time is that actors look too old or too young and it's never authentic. This is authentic, touching, and real. It captures the ups and downs, and it's amazing to watch it unfold. It's a landmark production. From the first shot to the last, I can't imagine changing a single thing.

Two cowboys share a forbidden relationship over the years, only seeing each other at Brokeback Mountain where the first met.
Verdict
Brokeback Mountain is haunting and mesmerizing. This forbidden love between two men is all the more powerful due to the potential consequences, but what really propels it to greatness is the detail and nuance. Was it Jack's dreaming that annoyed Ennis or the fact that Jack proposed to take care of him financially. The spouses faced the stark reality that not only an affair occurred but not knowing if their relationships with their husbands were a complete sham. The question lingers throughout, what does it mean to be a man? Does a man have to act a certain way? Hide his feelings? Or hold his ground?

Andy Dufresne is imprisoned for murder. In prison he struggles, triumphs, and even makes a few friends, but Andy is patient, smart, and has lots of time.
Verdict
It's a great movie. The writing is very good, every scene leading to the climax, building the world and characters for a specific reason. This is less a prison break movie and more an examination into what a life sentence does to a person, how it institutionalizes him. It's also a story about two friends Dufresne (Tim Robbins) and Red (Morgan Freeman).
Dufresne is a convicted murderer, who through sheer will accomplishes great feats even in prison. He ultimately experiences the ultimate triumph for a man in prison.

The designs of the machines and characters endure as does the imprint of this series. This is the rare sequel that surpasses the original. It also looks good, the cinematography is a step above, and it should be. There are some great sets to see.
It's been many years since I've seen this, and I didn't realize just how good it is.

Plot
A skilled London police officer is assigned to a small town that 's harboring a dark secret.
Verdict
I love this comedy. It's clever, witty, and just fun. The humor is British, subtle, and multi layered while being endlessly quotable. It's a spoof of action movies that pokes fun at the usual tropes before embracing many of those same tropes. The detail is incredible. Almost all of the jokes have a pay off when they're made and later in the movie. If you haven't seen this, you should. For the greater good.

Plot
Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you couldn't awaken? Computer hacker Neo dives into an underworld with a shocking truth. The life he knows is an elaborate deception.
Verdict
This is such an awesome movie. From the melding of sci-fi and action to the aesthetics and concepts. The movie has numerous iconic scenes from the dojo to the lobby, rooftop rescue, and the subway fight.
What is real? That's a question that pervades the movie and asks the audience to question their own perceptions. Real is just a feeling, something we tell ourselves.
You've probably seen this movie a few times, but there is a lot of foreshadowing. The movie follows the rule of cool, but in a construct that completely works. It's smart, the action is amazing, and it's still engaging.

A down and out musician attempts one last audition before giving up on his dream.
Verdict
This is simply an amazing film from the Coen brothers. Every part of it works in tandem. The cinematography, lighting, music, story, and acting are all superb. Oscar Isaac is one to watch. The soundtrack becomes the star of the film, and it is even more impressive that Isaac performed the music live during the scenes. The beginning and ending overlay and work well together. I thought about this movie for weeks after I saw it. If I saw it again, I would like it even more.

Verdict:
This movie is incredible. The script is amazing and the acting is sublime. It's such an incredibly well made movie where everything comes together so well. I regret I didn't see it in the theater. I want to rewatch immediately, but at nearly three hours that's not so easy. The last hour wasn't quite as good as the first, with a few decisions I found odd. It lost the momentum and tension the movie had been building.

Very well written, with great dialog and a great story. It's no surprise the Coen brothers developed a cult classic. The setting makes this movie, acting as an independent character. It's a setting, including the snow and accents, that adds to the charm.

Engrossing from the start, with a blistering tempo before it lets up. JK Simmons is amazing. How far do you push yourself without breaking? The ending is a complete culmination of all the events leading up to it. Has Andrew lost it or has he finally impressed his teacher. It's a stunning ending.

Plot Over the course of twelve years, Mason grows up. The movie was filmed over twelve years to accurately capture the ages of the actors.
Verdict

This is simply incredible and a movie that everyone needs to watch (or watch again). The music, cinematography, and acting is great, with everything working in tandem.

A boy is raised by a Buddhist monk on an isolated floating temple where the years pass like the seasons.
Verdict
It's a simple yet powerful movie. There is very little dialog, limited locations, limited actors but it's still a very engrossing film. A solemn tale exploring how adulthood reflects childhood, life marches on, our lives build upon themselves. Sometimes we are given the chance to make amends. I'm sure there is a lot of Buddhist symbolism i failed to see, but that doesn't stop this film from being great.

I've seen this movie so many times. It's got such great acting performances, though Farmiga is an exception. She just didn't work. It's such a departure from cliches. DiCaprio's character struggles internally as he infiltrates organized crime. His performance is standout as he wrestles with who he really is.
