I Am Ali (2014)

I don't know a lot about boxing as I'm not a fan of the sport but I do know the names of some famous boxers, Muhammed Ali probably being the first I've heard off. But I knew nothing other than his name and that it's not his birth name as he changed it when he converted to Islam so I decided to check out I Am Ali to learn more about him. 

Through audio clips and archive footage with the Ali himself and interviews with his sons and daughters, his ex-wife, his friends, his boxing opponents and many others, Clare Lewins's documentary tells the story of the man behind the legend and discusses what made Muhammed Ali the great man he was. 

Because, as I've learnt from this, he wasn't just a boxer, but he was a great father, a man devoted to his family --he did divorce a couple of times though--, an activist, he was an example of racial pride, and probably the greatest Afro-American civil rights icon. 

But he was also a bit of an enigma. He was against violence and fiercely opposed to the Vietnam war, and yet made his fortune by beating the shit out of people. He was also arrogant and full of himself, so much so that the name he picked, Muhammed Ali, means as he said, "worthy of all praises" and "most high" respectively. 

Part of the documentary focuses on Ali's professional life. This part features some of his classic fights against George Foreman, Joe Frazier and Sonny Liston, and it also shows how much Ali influenced other boxers -- Mike Tyson, for example, aspired to be at the same level of Ali. 

Focus World, Quest, Universal Pictures

The problem with I Am Ali is that it isn't as interesting as it should have been. Instead, it is quite tedious and unengaging and I never quite got the sense of the man or the legend. Muhammed Ali arguably was a very interesting character but this documentary just does not do him justice. Also, it feels more like a movie than a documentary.

Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up B-movie director maanges 14 women on the journey to wrestling stardom.
It was reported on October 18 that Shakira Barrerra (Hulu's East Los High, MTV's Faking It) joined the cast as a Yolanda, stage name Yo-Yo, a Mexican American stripper and out-and-proud lesbian.
Reported on January 5 that Annabella Sciorra cast as Rosalie Biagi, mother to the youngest of the GLOW girls.

It was reported on November 3 that Netflix acquired this sci-fi thriller, starring Maika Monroe, Ed Skrein, and Gary Oldman. Written by Noga Landau, a street-smart-grifter (Monroe) is the latest victim kidnapped and held captive in a fatal experiment. Tau, an advanced artificial intelligence developed by her kidnapper Alex (Skrein), is her captor. She must race against the boundaries of man and machine to win her freedom before she suffers the same fate as the previous subjects.

DAILY CALL SHEET: JUNE 25, 2018

Parasite (1982) Typical 80s 3-D movie where the Ds stand for drab, dated, and downright dumb. Could also stand for Demi Moore, who had to start somewhere. TIL: C.S. Lewis described evil not as the opposite of good, but as spoiled goodness, a parasite living off the real thing.

And finally, a couple of items of interests. Universal has announced plans to release their Complete 30-Film Classic Monsters Blu-ray Collection on August 28. Over 46 hours of monster movies spanning 25 years, including the original Spanish version of Dracula which was filmed simultaneously with the Lugosi classic. The price tag is a steep $150, but will probably go on sale at some point.

Meanwhile, Shudder has released a trailer for The Last Drive-In, a 24 hour marathon of 13 horror films hosted by the one and only Joe Bob Briggs. Tune in July 13th for what will likely be the last chance to see Joe Bob do his spiel.

Marvel Update: GOTG3, CAPTAIN MARVEL, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME and AVENGERS 4!!

Drax may be invisible by being motionless, but Marvel isn't! Lots of Marvel updates today for you!

Let's start with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3 which Kevin Feige recently updated Christina Radish over at Collider:

“[Writer/director] James [Gunn] has delivered a draft and we begin official pre-production on that very, very soon. It’ll be shooting early next year. Captain Marvel finishes in about two weeks, Spider-Man starts in about two weeks, and then Guardians 3 will start early next year.”

Awesome but also kind of bittersweet as Gunn has said in the past that he is wrapping up GOTG with this third iteration (at least this version of GOTG). And of course, there is some bitterness with the demise of Gamora in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Is she truly gone?

Also, you can see from the quote above that CAPTAIN MARVEL is just about finished production and will transition to post in ~2 weeks. It's uncertain at this point if there will be a CM presence of some sort at Comic-con (Marvel is NOT in Hall H this year) but it makes sense that they could show the clips of what was shown at CineEurope recently.

Moving on to SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING 2 or as it is now known as SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME after Tom Holland (Peter Parker) instagramed (by accident?) the new name:

..And speaking of movie titles, AVENGERS 4 still does not have a name. What I'm hearing is that we won't have that information until at least a CAPTAIN MARVEL teaser is released. So it could be a while. Months even. I think it's all a self-imposed gag order to restrict any leaking of spoiler-ish information. Makes sense. AVENGERS 4 will be a game changer and has EXTREMELY high stakes involved for Marvel and Disney.

CAPTAIN MARVEL opens on March 8, 2019. AVENGERS 4 opens May 3, 2019. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME opens July 5, 2019. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3 does not have a release date yet, but it is anticipated that it will take the "Untitled Marvel Movie" slot of May 1, 2020. 

ANNOUNCING The Fred MacMurray Blogathon!!!

Fred MacMurray had one of the most diverse film careers in Hollywood. Screwball in the 30s, Noir and War films in the 40s, Westerns in the 50s, Disney and Television in the 60s, the man did it all. He also had an impressive list of leading ladies: Carole Lombard, Barbara Stanwyck, Katharine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, Jean Arthur, and Madeleine Carroll to name a few. For quite some time I've been wanting to host a blogathon celebrating his incredible career and this year I've finally decided to do it.

The Blogathon will start on August 30th, our honoree's birthday, and conclude on September 1. Topics may cover any aspect of his career. Since MacMurray has such a huge amount of credits to his name I'm asking for no duplicates. You can view his filmography here.

HORROR PACK UNBOXING - May 2018

Another month has passed, and with it comes another Horror Pack shipment. Cory put it off, but he's finally getting around to opening it up! This month includes Wes Craven's early work The Last House on the Left, the star-studded Stonehearst Asylum - inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe, and the fantastically strange indie Resolution. But that also leaves this months blu-ray exclusive, The Black Dahlia Haunting which leaves Cory a little skeptical.
