DAILY CALL SHEET: MAY 31, 2019

Destroy All Monsters (1968) Classic! Never forget that Godzilla and pals did the 'all hands on deck' thing decades before Avengers: Endgame. TIL: Well, Ecclesiastes does say two are more effective than one, so seven monsters working together has to be pretty great, right?

Still Voices - Addams Family Values (1993) "Learn the sweet magic of a cheerful face.” - Oliver Wendall Holmes

Dad Rock Daily: Prince - 1999 (1982) Lyrically it's the usual mix of spirituality and smut. Musically it's a milestone. Hard to believe he had even better stuff coming after this. Laudable Lyrics: I'm in love with God, he's the only way, 'cuz you and I know we gotta die some day.

DAILY CALL SHEET: MAY 30, 2019

The Dead Pit (1989) Demonic doc and his lobotomized zombies escape from beneath an asylum. Typical late 80's nonsense. TIL: It's a long held tradition in the Church that the mentally ill are among “the least of these” whom we are to care for as though they are Christ himself.

Still Voices - Splice (2009) "That is the most godlike feeling a human can experience; being ignored by rebellious child." Dennis Garvin

Dad Rock Daily: John Sebastian - John B. Sebastian (1970) Who needs controlled substances to mellow out when all you need to do is put this album on repeat. Laudable Lyrics: "I had a dream last night, what a lovely dream it was. I dreamed we all were alright, happy in a land of Oz."

And finally, to each their own, but it feels like a lot of the criticisms of Godzilla King Of The Monsters were written by people who never saw a Godzilla film, or forgot what they were like. Hopefully I can do a full review later; for now, just enjoy monsters punching each other in the face.

Thursday Movie Picks: Television Edition: Secret Agents/Spies

There's always been that one TV series I watched that was involving secret agents and spies. It was La Femme Nikita when I was a kid, Chuck when I was a teen, Agent Carter, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Homeland in my early twenties. Unfortunately, I've already picked most of these so for this week's Thursday Movie Picks, the series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves, I'm going with shows I want(ed) to watch but never started.

(Plots are taken straight from IMDb as I'm yet to see them)

Deutschland 83 (2015)

Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay) is recruited by the HVA to infiltrate the West Germany army. As a rookie spy, his decisions constantly put his cover at risk and force his agency to take extreme measures.

Deutschland 86 (2018)

Abandoned by Moscow and desperate for cash, the East German leadership pushes their secret operatives to experiment with global capitalism and save their sinking socialist ship. Long banished to Africa for his sins in 1983, Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay) is now sent back into the field.

Mission: Impossible (1988-1990)

An elite covert operations unit carries out highly sensitive missions subject to official denial in the event of failure, death or capture.

DAILY CALL SHEET: MAY 29, 2019

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders (2016) Animated tribute to Batman '66 with much of the original cast on hand. Holy nostalgia! TIL: Most of Batman's writers see him as a lapsed Catholic/Episcopalian. Um, because of the guilt and justice thing, not the dressing up as a bat.

Still Voices - It Conquered the World (1956) "God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to guard and defend it." - Daniel Webster

Dad Rock Daily: Barry White - I've Got So Much To Give (1973) Given Barry's rep, the album surprisingly begins with soul crushing utter heartbreak. By the end, though, you know where it ends up. Yeah, baby. Laudable Lyrics: Now don't your conscience kinda, kinda bother you?

PODCAST 361: The Bride, The Hunger & Monster Dog [Universal Rockstar Edition]

This week the Horror Crew take on three films that breath new life into classic horror films with the introduction of rockstars. Forest covers The Bride, a supposed follow up to Bride of Frankenstein starring Sting. Rhiannon shares her appreciation for the vampire film The Hunger starring David Bowie. And last but not least, Cory talks Monster Dog, the underwhelming werewolf movie starring Alice Cooper.

DAILY CALL SHEET: MAY 28, 2019

Glastonbury Fayre (1972) Sort of a British Woodstock with half the talent, twice the naked hippies, and 100% more Catholic priests holding mass in the middle of a field. TIL: Catholic World Youth Day attendance consistently dwarfs that of most gatherings, even rock festivals.

Still Voices - Catwoman (2004) "Like a golden ring in a swine’s snout is a beautiful woman without judgment.: - Proverbs 11:22

Dad Rock Daily: Melanie - Leftover Wine (1970) Winsome warbler's return to her coffee house roots outshines most of her studio output. Laudable Lyrics: He may be sitting right next to you, he may be beautiful people too, and if you take care of him maybe I'll take care of you.

Booksmart (2019)

Every now and then, a new high school coming-of-age film makes its way into our heart and instantly becomes a classic. Recently, thankfully, we've had plenty of female-led ones — just think of Easy A, The Edge of Seventeen, or Lady Bird. Olivia Wilde's directorial debut, Booksmart, is not quite the revelation I was led to believe it'd be, but it's nevertheless a smart, energetic and fun teenage film with a nice twist on the genre.

The film follows two best friends, Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever), whose youth so far has been all work and no play as they both have been trying to ensure themselves a place in the college of their dreams, hence they've been missing out on all the high school experiences. On the eve of their graduation, they discover that, no matter how little they worked, their classmates are all either going to great colleges — the "easy" girl (Molly Gordon) is going to Yale just like Molly — or landing dream jobs — the twenty-year-old stoner (Eduardo Franco) is going to work at Google.

Upon discovering this, Molly's world is brutally upended, and she is overwhelmed that she and Amy have wasted so much time being perfect students and nothing else when they could have had both a social life and get into a good college. Determined to make up for lost time, the two friends set out on a wild and crazy mission of having four years of partying and fun in one night.

Booksmart's is a very simple story, one that has been done before as it's very reminiscent of Superbad — it is essentially the girl version of it —, and there are some wasted situations there and there — when Molly and Amy go to the wrong party and end up at George's mystery murder party it could have been so much fun if handled properly but instead the writers (Susanna Fogel, Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, and Katie Silberman) went for cheap laughs and made Molly and Amy take a weird and quite unsettling drug trip — but, overall, the girls' shenanigans are entertaining and fun to watch.

The characters, unfortunately, don't go past the Saturday Night Live-style caricatures and the high school stereotypes. Also, it was quite disappointing to see how clichéd the gay characters were considering how much thought was put into the lesbian character, Amy, and the character of the teacher, Miss Fine (Jessica Williams), has a quite disappointing/problematic development.

Thankfully, the two leading characters are fleshed out and compelling young women as the writers decided to focus on friendship and feminism rather than teen themes such as hooking up and getting drunk/high. Also, the chemistry Feldstein and Dever share is so genuine, you can't help but fall in love with them and their friendship — watching them fight like that at the party was truly heartbreaking.

Great chemistry isn't the only thing that Feldstein and Dever bring to the film as they both give energetic and lovable performances, the first nailing the type A personality, the latter delivering very well the (sexual) struggles of a young lesbian. As for the rest of the cast, ,the actors all provide a more than solid support, whether it's Billie Lourde (Carrie Fisher's daughter) who steals the show every time she is on screen as the wild Gigi, or Noah Galvin and Austin Crute who do wonders with their criminally stereotyped gay characters.

The comedy is another aspect of Booksmart that didn't fully work for me. While there's plenty of effective and nicely set-up jokes and gags, there still are some forced jokes are and there and overall the humour is quite raunchy.

Despite the flaws in the script, Booksmart makes for a solid debut from Wilde who delivers a fun, visually beautiful —some sequences and shots are terrific, and the colours are so vibrant — coming-of-age film with a soundtrack that will eventually grow on you.

Why Blu-Ray and DVDs are not released for each and every Bollywood Movie ?

Upcoming Bollywood movie DVD & Blu-Ray , Latest Bollywood movie DVD & Blu-Ray

Why Blu-Ray and DVDs are not released for each and every Bollywood Movie ?

The answer to all of this is PIRACY . Yes , Piracy is behind all of this . Because of not so stringent anti-piracy laws in India , people are able to watch movies online in Blu-Ray , DVD prints without even paying for it . That's why the revenue from sale of DVD/Blu-ray is very poor for bollywood film producers as compared to Hollywood (where even before the release of the movie in theaters , the DVD/Blu-ray release dates are already announced) . This in a way is a great opportunity for both the streaming sites and the producers . Confused ? Lets clear this .

  • Streaming sites - Streaming sites add a extra clause in their agreement while purchasing the Digital rights of the movie that no DVD/Blu-Ray of the given movie will be released . This gives the streaming sites a monopoly . Yes . Now if a person wants to watch the same movie (once it is out of theaters) , either he can watch it on TV or online . But who can bear those ads on TV ? Moreover , TV premieres are generally held after Digital Premieres . So , the only option one is left with is subscribe to streaming sites and watch the movie . Thus , online streaming sites benefits with no DVD/Blu-Ray release .

  • Producer's Benefit - The extra amount which the producer gets by signing the no DVD release contract is far better than the revenues out of sale of DVD/Blu-Rays . Thus , he benefits .

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum Movie Review

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Watch the trailer
Written by: Derek Kolstad and Shay Hatten and Chris Collins & Marc Abrams (screenplay by), Derek Kolstad (story by), Derek Kolstad (based on characters created by)
Directed by: Chad Stahelski
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, Lance Reddick, Anjelica Huston, Jerome Flynn, Jason Mantzoukas
Rated: R

Plot
Super-assassin John Wick is on the run after killing a member of the international assassin's guild. With a $14 million price tag on his head, he is the target of hit men and women everywhere.

Verdict
It's big action set pieces nearly start to finish, and it's very entertaining. I do miss story elements and world building from the first movie, but Chapter 3 is an effective and brutal action movie. While it isn't the same leap forward John Wick was, it's a nice progression for this action movie franchise.
Watch it.

Review
You don't need to see the previous movies to get into this, though it definitely helps. The first one had a, or really the, story, the second was a lot of mayhem. The third is more mayhem.
I do miss the story the first one had (read my review), it did a great job of world building and creating the myth of John Wick while also showing us how deadly he is. The sequels have focused on the action almost entirely. I miss the story aspect of this, but I acknowledge there isn't a good way to push the story. The franchise has moved past that.
The John Wick trilogy happens across a couple of days. This picks up right after Chapter 2 (read my review).
John Wick has an hour before he's excommunicado and an open target for the underground world of assassins.  He'll no longer be part of the assassin's club and afforded the amenities.
At that point no one can help him, lest they pay the consequences. Parabellum means prepare for war and that's what this is, war.

In one of the first scenes, Wick is attacked in a library and there is some wild book fighting. It's one of the only one on one fights and it's a good one. The next scene is a knife fight in something that looks like a weapons museum. It's brutal, and has one of the most brutal scenes in the movie because it happens so slowly.

The story is pieced in between the fight scenes, and at this point it's the weaker element. None of the sequels have built and expanded the lore like the first movie.

There's an amazing motorcycle fight scene as Wick prepares to team up with Winston to fight the High Table. He has to get to the Continental, but there are a lot of people in his way.

The movie does a great job of distinguishing itself from other action movies towards the end We've seen one man fight off a tactical crew of men, but there's a few differences in this movie. The Wick  movies are just brutal.
These scenes definitely have a kick to the sound. The sound mix is good throughout. Guns are loud and the punching sounds land with a thud. It's louder than most movies, but it really ups the mood. I don't know if that's due to the theater I was in or a direct aspect of the movie.

This leaves the franchise wide open for another addition, though it's funny that John is only seriously injured in the first fight. Towards the end of the movie especially, he seems invincible.

I thought the first movie did a great job balancing story and action. It was the kind of fighting we just hadn't seen before. This movie isn't the same leap forward, but it is a nice progression.

DAILY CALL SHEET: MAY 27, 2019

Forbidden Zone (1980) Hervé Villechaize rules a strange dimension. There's a plot, but really it's just Oingo Boingo being weird because weird is fun. TIL: Every innate desire reveals the existence of its desired object, i.e. the craving for novelty reveals the transcendent.

Still Voices - Forbidden Zone (1980) "Country and western is the music of the devil. That's the real truth of the matter." - Rick Wakeman

Dad Rock Daily: Oingo Boingo - Good For Your Soul (1983) You may not always be in the mood for surrealist ska, but when you are, where else is there to go but the Elfman brothers. Laudable Lyrics: .devas eb lliw uoy dna traeh ruoy otni suseJ tpeccA (Hint: Play the song backwards)

Cold Pursuit Movie Review

Cold Pursuit (2019)
Rent The Mummy on Amazon Video
Written by: Frank Baldwin (screenplay by), Kim Fupz Aakeson (based on the movie 'Kraftidioten' written by)
Directed by: Hans Petter Moland
Starring: Liam Neeson, Laura Dern, Micheál Richardson
Rated: R
Watch the trailer

Plot
A grieving snowplow driver seeks out revenge against the drug dealers who killed his son.

Verdict
It's Taken in the snow. Liam Neeson is a snow plow driver that goes on a murder spree for revenge. The movie is oddly comedic at times, but never fully embraces dark comedy. Leaning into that more definitely would have helped. What we get is an mismatch of genre and tone. Neeson has done many revenge movies, and this one ranks in the lower half.
Skip it.

Review
This is based on the 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance.

Neeson feels like he has his own revenge sub genre, originated by Taken. There's Taken on a train, The Commuter (read my review), Run All Night, many others that include the Taken franchise. None have surpassed Taken.
Neeson plays Nels, a snow plow driver who is citizen of the year. When his son is mistaken for someone else and killed, Nels decided to take revenge. Nels is a killing machine, not even flinching. It just seemed like a leap for someone who is a family man plow driver. Every time a character dies, or is killed, a death card appears on screen with the character's name. It's a neat touch that aids pacing, but I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be comedic or not.

The villain, Viking, is a drug dealer that is nothing more than a caricature. The movie makes sure we won't like him, making Viking incredibly flat. Viking leans so hard into villain tropes it's almost comedic, but not quite.
It's Mr. Plow! If only Nels had a catchy jingle.
I was never sure what tone this is after. The final scene is one of the most awkwardly comedic, but the entirety of the movie up to this point was never quite this silly.
With the body count generated, I'd think the local cops would be more concerned.
I doubt Nels will win citizen of the year again.
This has a few strangely comedic parts that don't seem to fit. If the movie tried for more dark comedy where characters are haphazardly or accidentally killed, that would help set this movie apart. It's easy to mock Neeson's other revenge movie or pseudo spoof them. The main character's name alone, Nels Coxman is a joke in of itself. Viking definitely could have done more with that.

The answer to everything in this movie seems to be murder. That's fine, but the movie never quite settles on standard action revenge more or revenge dark comedy.

DAILY CALL SHEET: MAY 26, 2019

Ruby (1977) Part Exorcist, part J.D.'s Revenge, part... Sunset Blvd? This gangster/possession flick is obviously a jumbled mess, but Piper Laurie makes it fun. TIL: Weary of their ways, the Pope announced in June 2014 that all members of the Italian mafia were excommunicated.

Still Voices - End of Days (1999) "I see crosses at every turn. My flesh shudders over it, but my heart adores them." - St. Francis de Sales

Dad Rock Daily: The Beatles - Abbey Road (1969) The lad's true swan song has flaws and filler, but is still an album most artists would kill to have produced. Laudable Lyrics: And in the end, the love you take Is equal to the love you make. (What else were they going to be?)
