MUST WATCH: New Featurette On The 3D Conversion Of Pixar's FINDING NEMO 3D!

Well Pixar may not have known it at the time of making FINDING NEMO that it would make such a great 3D movie - but clearly it is such a beast. All those underwater scenes, floating objects in front of you, surface water approaching the camera and particulate matter suspended in mid-water all are going to make for stunning immersion and I can't wait to see it!

Indeed, the creative talent behind the movie used all of these advantages to help shape the 3D conversion final rendering of the movie.

FINDING NEMO was already in my top five Pixar movies of all time and now adding on 3D? A no-brainer really.

The following featurette includes segments from Andrew Stanton (Director), Lee Unkrich (Co-Director), John Lasseter (Executive Producer), Josh Hollander (Director of 3D Production) and a friend of mine - Bob Whitehill (3D Supervisor).

Here's the storyline for the movie:
In the colorful and warm tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef, a Clownfish named Marlin lives safe and secluded in a quiet cul-de-sac with his only son, NEMO. Fearful of the ocean and its unpredictable risks, he struggles to protect his son. Nemo, like all young fish, is eager to explore the mysterious reef. When Nemo is unexpectedly taken far from home and thrust into a dentist's office fish tank, Marlin finds himself the unlikely hero on an epic journey to rescue his son. In his quest, Marlin is joined by a good Samaritan named Dory, a Regal Blue Tang fish with the worst short-term memory and biggest heart in the entire ocean. As the two fish continue on their journey, encountering numerous dangers, Dory's optimism continually forces Marlin to find the courage to take risks and overcome his fears. In doing so, Marlin gains the ability to trust and believe, like Dory, that things will work out in the end. Confronting seabirds, sewer systems, and even man himself, father and son's fateful separation ends in triumph. And the once-fearful Marlin becomes a true hero in the eyes of his son, and the entire ocean.

FINDING NEMO 3D surfaces in theaters on September 14. Go sea it!!

Toronto International Film Festival Adds DIAL M FOR MURDER 3D And FINDING NEMO 3D

If you're going to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and you love 3D movies you're in a bit of luck! TIFF has decided to include two very interesting library movies that have been updated to modern stereoscopic 3D standards.

While Alfred Hitchcock's DIAL M FOR MURDER was originally made in 3D, it will take work to get it remastered for today's digital 3D theaters. Here's the description from TIFF: "Alfred Hitchcock’s devilish drawing-room thriller, about a retired tennis pro (Ray Milland) who plans the “perfect” murder of his adulterous wife (Grace Kelly), is revived in a new, eye-popping 3D digital restoration."

Also being added is Pixar's FINDING NEMO which should be a stunning experience in 3D. As you probably know if you're a frequent reader of MarketSaw or a 3D fan, underwater 3D is absolutely amazing whether it's animation or real life (same goes for space or mid-air shots). The reason is objects are suspended in front of you without being cut off by the end of the frame and therefore can utilize more space to present the 3D. Another way of describing it is that when you take off your 3D glasses you will see a blur on the screen - that blur represents the overlapping visual information for each eye being presented at the same time. Now if those blurs are too close to the edge of the frame they can't be presented without being cut off somewhat, causing issues to be avoided. Suspended objects are no where near the edge of frame and the 3rd dimension can be exploited if so desired.

Disney Confirms JOHN CARTER OF MARS And FRANKENWEENIE Will Be 3D

Tim Burton's FRANKENWEENIE is being pushed back (not surprising looking at Burton's workload) from 2011 to a March 9, 2012 release.

The movie is based on the comedic horror short that Burton made in 1984 while a film school student. The story centers on a man who brings his dog back to life after it is killed by a car.

THR reports that FRANKENWEENIE will no longer be a live action film but will use stop-motion (similar to CORALINE) and will be in black and white.

JOHN CARTER OF MARS has a release date now: June 8, 2012.

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton (FINDING NEMO, WALL-E), JOHN CARTER OF MARS brings this captivating hero to the big screen in a stunning adventure epic set on the wounded planet of Mars, a world inhabited by warrior tribes and exotic desert beings. Based on the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “Barsoom Series,” the film chronicles the journey of Civil-War veteran John Carter, who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas and Dejah Thoris.

Both movies will be in Disney Digital 3D.

Great to finally have confirmation on JOHN CARTER being 3D. I was fairly certain FRANKENWEENIE would be. JOHN CARTER should be a huge, tentpole release for Disney and I expect TRON-like marketing for it in the coming year. Something to be excited about!
