Dad Rock Daily: Four Tops - Still Waters Run Deep (1970) Excellent title track gives way to well worn covers and familiar filler. Still worth a listen though. Laudable Lyrics: Across my dreams with nets of wonder I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love.

My Top 3 Sandra Bullock Romantic Comedies

Whether she's starring in a comedy or a drama, Sandra Bullock always brings that something that lifts the film — reason why she's the first actress I've fallen in love with and she still is, after countless years, my favourite actress.

Since she's turning 55 today, and her romantic comedies are some of the most rewatchable and enjoyable — trust me, I hate rom-coms and yet I love hers —, I decided to narrow down my top 3 romantic comedies starring America's sweetheart.

#3 The Proposal (2009)

Bullock stars as Margaret Tate, a successful Canadian editor at a prestigious New York publishing house. In order to avoid deportation because of her expired visa, Margaret blackmails her assistant, Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), to marry her; in return, she'd promote him and publish his book. However, the immigration clerk (Denis O'Hare) is sceptical and schedules an interview on the next Monday which forces Margaret to travel to Alaska to spend the weekend with Andrew's family and learn about each other.

Yet another clichéd and predictable romantic story, the film is filled with humour for most of its running time, it's so funny to see Margaret and Andrew interact, there's a weird and quite funny dance scene in the woods featuring Sandy and Betty White, and the chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds is very nice. Not to mention how charismatic both are. Bonus, Oscar Nuñez gives a hilarious, over-the-top performance as an exotic dancer/Mr. I do it all. 

#2 Miss Congeniality (2000)

Bullock stars as Gracie Hart, an FBI agent who is forced to go undercover in the Miss United States beauty pageant when a terrorist group menace of bombing the event. The problem? She's never been in a beauty pageant. She doesn't even own a dress. She doesn't even own a brush.

Despite the silly plot and even sillier motive that drives the terrorist, this is a funny and entertaining film, Sandra Bullock is sweet and charming as usual, her character is so relatable, her being not girly at all — I've always identified with her, reason why I've always loved this — and, although Eric (Benjamin Bratt) falling in love with Gracie only after the makeover sends a wrong message, I cannot help but wait for that kiss and smile when it finally happens every time I watch the film. Bonus, Michael Caine is delightful as the beauty fixer. 

#1 While You Were Sleeping (1995)

Bullock stars as Lucy, a lonely young woman working as a token collector who has fallen in love with a commuter, Peter (Peter Gallagher). On Christmas day, the is mugged and falls onto the rails, Lucy saves him but he goes into a coma. At the hospital, Lucy's mistaken for Peter's fiancée, she goes along with it and ends up spending the holidays with the man's family. Peter's brother, Jack (Bill Bullman), is very suspicious though as Lucy is not his brother's type at all. 

You guessed it, it is another simple, predictable and not so plausible story, but it is such a feel-good movie I cannot help but love it and rewatch it every year around Christmas. Next-door girl Lucy is such a likeable and sympathetic character thanks to Bullock's sweet, charming and believable performance, and, just like Lucy, the initial crush for Peter Gallagher's handsome and fascinating Peter turns into love for his sensitive and caring brother, played wonderfully by a charismatic Bill Pullman who has great chemistry with Bullock. Bonus, Michael Rispoli is hilarious as the son of Lucy's landlord.

The Creeping Terror (1964) Dirty carpet eats local teens and fights the army. Poorly made in every way so, of course, it's a must-see. TIL: God made everything that creeps and declared them good. Alas, all creation shared in the corruption brought about by man's sin. Shame on us.

Dad Rock Daily: Kiss - Alive! (1975) Look, if you take Kiss too seriously, that's your fault. Besides, this is actually better than all the studio albums which preceded it. Laudable Lyrics: Oh no, you got to pay when you hit rock bottom and you're there to stay.

Thursday Movie Picks: Television Edition: Crimes

A weekly series hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves

Whether they happened in real life or it's just fiction, crimes always make for a very compelling subject; when properly executed, of course. Today, for the last Thursday Movie Picks of July 2019, we are asked to pick 3 to 5 crime TV series. Without wasting any more of your time, here are my picks — I went with a season as opposed to the entire series as these are shows I significantly enjoyed one season over the other(s). 

American Crime Story — Season 1 aka The People v. O. J. Simpson (2016)

It explores the O.J. Simpson (Cuba Gooding Jr.) murder case, specifically following the legal teams battling to convict or acquit the football legend. It's absolutely brilliant, very compelling and the performances are great all around. 

Fargo — Season 1 (2014)

A hitman, Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton), ends up influencing a Minnesota insurance salesman, Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman). This meeting sets forth a series of murders and Deputy Molly Solverson (Allison Tolman) attempts to solve the crimes. Simply outstanding. It has a great plot, great cast, humour, and Thornton's character is unforgettable. 

True Detective — Season 1 (2014)

Two Louisiana State Police Detectives, Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), are forced to revisit a homicide case they worked almost 20 years before. Despite not liking McConaughey and season 2 starring on of my favourite actors, Colin Farrell, this is the one I love the most. It is dark and tense, the plot is very interesting and the performances are great.

In this article , we will be giving our review of Kriti Sanon & Diljit Dosanjh's "ARJUN PATIALA" . 

ARJUN PATIALA REVIEW

SYNOPSIS

• Arjun Patiala is a convoluted mess. The film is a spoof comedy and is a story within a story. Not sure how I can tell you the synopsis of the film where there is no story but let me try.

•  A budding writer comes to a famous producer to narrate a script. 

• The script is about this valiant cop Arjun Patiala, jiska ek hi sapna hai, sports quota se police ki naukri karna. He has a side kick as well Onida (Varun Sharma) who helps him fight crimes. And how can a script be complete without a heroine. So here enters Ritu (Kriti Sanon) who is a journalist (Luka Chuppi vibes much?). 

• Now how these three join forces to help solve crime in the town of Ferozepur in Punjab is what forms the rest of the story.

PERFORMANCES

• Diljit Dosanjh - Diljit is sincere in his performance as a cop. His character doesn't have much of a character arc but his energy on the screen is endearing. Post Udta Punjab, Diljit hasn't done films which explore his full potential. Phillauri, Welcome to New York, Soorma and now Arjun Patiala. All of the above movies have superlative performances. Still waiting for Diljit to choose a crackling script.

• Kriti Sanon - She doesn't have much to do except being the hero ki heartbeat. So nothing much to say about her performance as well. She is passable.

• Varun Sharma - Varun Sharma hasn't gotten out of his Choocha mode till now. Take him out of this film, and put him in any other film of the same genre you won't notice the difference. Yes, he gives a generic performance. On the other side, he gets some of the funniest lines of the movie.

• Coming to the supporting cast, you have the supremely talented Seema Pahwa, Pankaj Tripathi, Mohd. Zeeshan Ayub and Abhishek Banerjee (Stree fame). They shine in their small roles and bring a smile to your face every time they are on screen.

Story and Direction

• Well for starters, there is no logic to the story the writer is trying to tell. The movie qualifies in the genre of spoof comedy and I guess the reason director wanted that was to hide the incompetence of the script. In the name of spoof comedy, the writer tries to pass unfunny jokes which just makes the movie a tiring watch.

• As for direction, it's passable, to say the least. Here the director doesn't seem to be in control of what the movie wants to tell. The director tries to explore a lot of themes but doesn't justify even one of them.

Music 

• Music of the film is in complete contrast to other aspects . 

• Probably , the only part you enjoy in the movie .

• Main Deewana Tera is already a chart-buster , while crazy Habibi VS Decent Munda is just about enjoyable .

• For me , Sachiya Mohabbata by Sachet tandon (Bekhayali) stands out .

My Opinion

• As for my opinion, you can give Arjun Patiala a MISS. 

• It's unfunny and is like a kid in a candy store who can't decide what he actually wants and then lands on getting a little of everything. 

• At a time where you have movies like Article 15 in theaters, Arjun Patiala is that rocket which emits a lot of steam (when the trailer came), but then puts on a poor show on the day of delivery.

Watch it or Watch Out

No need to go to theaters for this one . Happy Monsoon !!
