The Weekly Movie Watch Volume 3

This week I watched Lone Survivor, A Night in Old Mexico, Darjeeling Limited, Five Easy Pieces.

I watch movies every week and then write down my thoughts. Read my previous reviews!
My rating is simple, Watch It, It Depends, Skip it.

Emile Hirsch, Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch in Lone Survivor
Lone Survivor - A harrowing tale of brave men.

Lone Survivor (2013)
Watch Lone Survivor
Written by: Peter Berg, Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson (book)
Directed by: Peter Berg
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster
Rated: R

Plot:
Marcus Luttrell and his team are stranded without support while trying to capture a Taliban leader.

Review:
The movie is an intense, edge of your seat ride. It's a well done movie that makes real the trauma these men went through. It's grueling, harrowing, and amazing. It's also not for the feint of heart as wounds are shown in detail. It is truly painful to watch.
Taylor Kitsch in Lone Survivor
Lone Survivor - Taylor Kitsch
Though, it does succumb to my pet peeve of showing a really intense scene from the end of the movie at the beginning. It's always unnecessary as the beginning of the film should, and in this case can, stand on it's own. The entire movie is shot outdoors and really looks great.
Watch it.

Robert Duvall's car in A Night in Old Mexico
A Night in Old Mexico - Robert Duvall goes to Mexico.
A Night in Old Mexico (2013)
Watch A Night in Old Mexico
Written by: William D. Wittliff
Directed by: Emilio Aragón
Starring: Robert Duvall, Jeremy Irvine
Rated: --

Plot:
Robert Duvall is forced to sell his ranch and goes to Mexico for one last, wild night.

Review:

Robert Duvall is in his element, a rough edged rancher mourning the loss of his farm. Duvall is the one good thing among the problem. Characters are flat, and the movie lacks depth. It's reminiscent of No Country for Old Men, but no where near as enjoyable. A movie presented as more or less grounded suffers from scenes added seemingly just because they are flashy and exciting.
Skip it.

Jason Schwartman, Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody in Darjeeling Limited
The Darjeeling Limited - A fun ride with three brothers.

Darjeeling Limited (2007)
Watch Darjeeling Limited
Written by: Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola & Jason Schwartzman
Directed by: Wes Anderson
Starring: Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman
Rated: R

Plot:
Three brothers bond as they travel across India.

Review:

It's a Wes Anderson film, prepare for the usual troupe of actors and a quirky film, but that isn't a bad thing. Adrian Brody does a great job. It's probably one of my favorite Anderson films. He always creates great characters, and this is a good story that deals with grief. As usual, it's a great looking film.
It depends.

Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces
Five Easy Pieces - A man stuck on the outside.
Five Easy Pieces (1970)
Watch Five Easy Pieces
Written by: Carole Eastman (screenplay), Bob Rafelson and Carole Eastman (story)
Directed by: Bob Rafelson
Starring: Jack Nicholson, Karen Black, Billy Green Bush
Rated: R

Plot:
A concert pianist from an upper class family quits to work on an oil rig.

Review:

Classic Nicholson. It depicts the frustration of the smartest man in the room. He detests everyone else, and even himself. This is an amazing character study. While it's a bit slow by most standards, I didn't mind that. Nicholson's character can't stand to be associated with his upper class family, but he doesn't fit anywhere else. He's stuck in the in between. The ending is understated, yet perfect.
Watch it.
