Summer Under the Stars Day 19: Rio Bravo (1959)

Today for TCM's Summer Under the Stars we take a behind-the-scenes look at Howard Hawks Rio Bravo (1959) starring John Wayne (today's star), Dean Martin, Ricky Neslon, Angie Dickinson, Walter Brennan, Ward Bond, and Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez.

Wayne plays Sheriff John T. Chance with Dean Martin as his drunk deputy, Duke, also known as Borachon. After arresting the brother of an important and dangerous man for murdering Pat Wheeler (Bond), the two along with Stumpy (Brennan) and youngster Colorado (Nelson) hole up in the jail until the marshall comes through. Feathers (Dickinson) helps out by keeping an eye on things outside - that and throwing a flower pot through the window.

Also, when you have two big singers like Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson, you just have to include a singing number in the picture.

Here are some behind-the-scenes photos I found on Pinterest. Why Dickinson was running around on set like that is beyond me - she doesn't wear that outfit in the film.

Ricky Nelson with Tinker Toy - he liked the horse so much he kept him after filming.
