Plot
A surreal day in the life of The Beatles, including many of their songs.
Verdict
This movie is charming and engaging due in part to youthful exuberance and wit. It also captures a little bit of Beatle-mania. It's fun and the music is great.
Watch it.
Review
The movie depicts a fun romp on concert day, chronicling the Beatle-mania fandom. It's a look at pop-culture in the '60s as it opens with crowds chasing The Beatles through the streets and to the train station.
It's exuberant but quite clever with a lot of sharp humor. A fan tells John that he looks like "him." She points at a mirror and tells him to look for himself. John looks in it and argues that his eyes are too light. As he walks away he muses that she looks more like "him."
It's chock full of one liners and visual gags. The entire movie has a counterculture vibe, displaying a certain level of disobedience. They continually refer to Paul's grandfather as a "clean old man." The actor playing the grandfather was constantly described as a "dirty old man" on a popular television series airing at the time.
Director Richard Lester has been called the father of MTV due to the camera work in the movie. This film had a direct impact on British spy thriller and comedies. If you watch Austin Powers, you can see the similarities. It's not an accident.
This is my broadest exposure to the band, and I really enjoyed the music. This movie depicts four guys that seem like a lot of fun to hang out with. The only thing that dates this movie is that it's in black and white.
