Mr. Right (2015)

Though I'm not into romantic comedies and I ralery like those with Anna Kendrick, I checked out Mr. Right anyway because Margaret over Cinematic Corner mentioned this movie --one scene where Rockwell is on a date with Kendrick and starts dacing with her to dodged bullets-- in her entry for the Mr. Rushmoore blogathon. Sure, she said it wasn't good, but could I miss a movie with Sam Rockwell dancing? The answer is simple, no.

After breaking up with her cheating boyfriend, Martha (Anna Kendrick) is heart-broken. A few days later, she bumps into a stranger (Sam Rockwell) that asks her out immediately. Though she thinks he's a creep, she agrees and they end up spending the next 10 hours together. They eventually fall in love but Mr. Right, as Martha calls him since she doesn't know his name, isn't perfect as she thought he was. She discovers that he wasn't being sarcastic about killing people, that he's actually a hitman and shit gets real.

The main plot --the one you read above-- isn't terrible. Actually, the romance between Martha and Mr. Right is interesting and sweet. You know it's not supposed to be cute and all that because he's a freaking hitman and finding that attractive/cute is definetely not okay --or maybe it is since this is Sam Rockwell we are talking about-- but you just cannot help but root for their love.

That said, Mr. Right, the movie not the character, has many problems, the first being the plot holes flying around like bullets in a final shootout and the many unresolved subplots that go absolutley nowhere and only distract you from the storyline.

Another of Mr. Right's problem is that it does not work that good as a comedy. The humour, though it's never (too) vulgar, is not humour but bad languange. There are a few jokes that are funny but beyond that --especially everything that comes out of Anna Kendrick's mouth who by the way makes for a very annoying leading character-- nothing is that funny and everything falls flat.

Focus World
As for the action, it works a tiny bit better. While it's not spectacular and you can tell their are fake, the action sequences are well corehograped and enjoyable, especially those involving Sam Rockwell.

Which brings me to the film's greatest strenght, Sam Rockwell. There's nothing this man can't do. He is so believable in the role of this sexy, creepy hitman who now goes around killing the people who hires him to kill people. Also, he manages to be hot and adorable even when he wears a clown nose to kill people. And he dances his way through fight scenes. And he makes the awful jokes kinda funny. This movie is worth watching for him alone. Actually, it's wroth watching for him only.
