Plot
Peter Parker balances his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and finds himself on the trail of a new menace prowling the skies of New York City.
Verdict
It's another Spider-Man reboot, but at least it's self aware, skipping the spider bite and providing a new angle with Spider-Man trying to impress Uncle Iron Man. A lot of this is Parker being told he's not ready.
Holland is great in the role, providing the energy and doubt a teen has. Keaton doesn't get to do much with a villain that could have a lot of depth but doesn't. Not a bad movie at all, but not one that's going to stand out either.
It depends.
Review
I'm not sure any Spider-Man movie can top Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse (read my review). That movie was visually stunning while working with a great script. I've predicted no Spider-Man movie can touch it, and so far that holds true.
Homecoming is a solid Spider-Man effort that does not delve into the origin of Spider-Man once again. That's something some of these super hero movies should note.
I like Holland as Spider-Man, but this franchise is a tough one. The first entry in 2002 set the stage for the deluge of super hero movies. With the sheer volume, it's difficult to stand out. While the movie is about average, Holland does a great job.
To start, the movie catches us up with Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War (read my review) where Iron Man and Captain America were at odds and Iron Man found Spider-Man.
Now Parker is back to high school. With all this energy, the desire to be productive, he's stuck. Parker wants to be an Avenger, wants to do more and now he's just helping people with directions. Iron Man is telling him he's not ready.
Being a teen, he's not content to stay put. He's an awkward teen and also a super hero. When he comes across an arms dealer, Spider-Man sees that as his chance to impress Iron Man and become an Avenger, but he only manages to get rebuked.
There's a dual nature of the confidence that comes with being a super hero while also being a teenager. Parker is both, and he has to juggle these feelings of doubt while hiding his abilities.
Keaton plays the villain, and the arc had potential. He's a blue collar guy that's forced into bankruptcy by bureaucracy. He steals alien technology and becomes an arms dealer while also masquerading as Vulture. The arc had potential as the movie attempts to humanize him towards the end, but Keaton is capable of more.
The end culminates in Parker reevaluating what he wants and what he needs. He wonders if maybe he isn't ready.

The Old Man & the Gun Movie Review
The Old Man & the Gun (2018)
Rent The Old Man & the Gun on Amazon Video

Starring: Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover, Tom Waits, John David Washington
Rated: PG-13

Plot
Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker and his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 after an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public.
Verdict
This is an intriguing movie about a man compelled to rob banks, and Redford really carries this effortlessly. He charms the viewer and other characters as Forrest Tucker. From the start I liked the look of the movie. It's styled to look like a '70s movie. With a combination of the cast and the writing, the movie compels you to watch, and that's an enjoyable task.
Watch it.
Review
I want to describe this movie as a metaphor. It's charming like, or maybe because of, Redford. It's about a man that enjoys his occupation and just can't stop. Redford is in his eighties, still making movies. There are parallels, real or imagined.
The movie is an easy watch. It's breezy, and in this case that's a compliment. From the start I loved the visual style. It's got the film grain of a much older movie and even the text has a seventies style. The shots and the visuals are good.
Redford is a lot of fun in this. He's a bank robber but he enjoys the job. I don't know if it's the thrill and excitement or the danger, but it's not about the money.
He's very nonchalant in his approach. So often in these movies the perpetrators need money and are desperate. Forrest Tucker isn't. He's methodical and pleasant. This movie is about an old guy that just can't stop robbing banks. It's somebody you wish was, or reminds you of, your grandfather.
Tucker is approaching mythical or folk hero status, and not many, maybe nobody could pull this off as effortlessly as Redford. The employees he encounters describe him as a charming gentleman.
This is a guy that knows one thing. He's good at it and he truly enjoys it. He smiles as he does that work, and neither jail nor a woman can stop him from fulfilling his purpose. Of course there is a question of morality there. Stealing doesn't conform to ethics, but at least Forest isn't violent. Robbing banks is his calling. He can't stop doing it.
He meets a woman while eluding the cops and that does complicate things. There's a cop on his trail, but cops have never worried Forest before.
You wonder how he's robbed so many banks and escaped jail so many times. It almost feels like a farce. Somehow he managed, and I was happy to see him keep doing it.

Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil by a police officer. Facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right.
Verdict
A heavy topics that depicts a police officer shooting an unnamed black man. The movie does a great job of showing the conflicted feelings people have. This movie is less about entertainment and more about making a point. It's a powerful movie, and Stenberg does a great job in the role. There's a lot of nuance to the movie and it generates a lot of discussion.
Watch it.
Review
At the core of this movie is Starr. She sees her friend shot by a police officer over a traffic stop.
Before that we see how afraid Starr is of the police when pulled over. That alone is telling. While the officer is portrayed as a bit aggressive, the victim, Khalil, isn't completely cooperative. That doesn't justify the outcome. That's one of the points being made. Starr shouldn't have to be that afraid, and there is a double standard.
Khalil has a right to complain. He was pulled over for being black. He gets no room to complain about that, where as a white person would have that space. This shows many sides of Black Live Matters and the repercussions of what happens when a cop shoots a black man. The movie covers a lot of issues and topics surprisingly well.
The movie emphasizes the double standard when a police officer that happens to be Starr's uncle states he gives white people more leeway and that he would pull his gun quicker on a black person.
Starr wrestles with what to do. Does she testify? This is compounded in a couple of ways, the least of which isn't that her testimony will probably do no good anyway. Her friends don't understand.
This even delves into code switching. Starr attends a predominantly white school. It's a different culture and they don't understand what Starr's neighborhood is like. While white people come off as a bit ignorant, that's not completely wrong, especially at this affluent school. When one of Starr's friends retorts that "Blue lives matters.", Starr is upset. Khalil was the victim. The police officer created the situation.
These issues are framed through Starr's perspective and she doesn't understand the double standard. Part of it is that one instance isn't the issue. That situation isn't an outlier. Starr was taught and then witnesses that the color of your skin can be crime enough.
There is a through-line of violence. It escalates, and violence begets violence. Starr's neighborhood stages a protest that gets out of hand, but the protest isn't just about Khalil's death. It's about systemic racism and how they feel ignored time and again.

Plot
Unaware of her past Carol Danvers regains her memories and becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.
Verdict
This is a competent super hero movie that manages to intertwine a few arcs with the typical save the world super hero story while having some fun. I enjoyed this more than I expected. There is a focus on the character and Marvel and Fury have a great dynamic. I definitely liked the heavy '90s nostalgia.
Watch it.
Review
Having been underwhelmed by Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame (read my review), I wasn't sure how much I'd like this movie. She seemed integral to the Endgame plot after the credits scene in Infinity War (read my review), but was barely in the movie.
If I had looked up the writers/directors before the movie started, I would have been more hopeful. They've done Sugar (read my review) and Mississippi Grind (read my review), both very different from a super hero movie and very character focused.
This starts with Captain Marvel being called Vers. She's a hot head hotshot that could be super powerful if only she could keep her emotions in check. Her emotions make her dangerous. Vers doesn't remember her past.
While I don't typically like jumps back in time this movie makes it a part of the plot as Vers' enemy is probing her memories looking for something. We get a few character building moments with a purpose that fit the story.
The question at this point is what are all these twisted memories? When does she become Captain Marvel? She seemed to be human in her memories, but she isn't now. She crashes through a building without a scratch.
The plot of saving thew world, which super her movies seem to be required to do, is intertwined with Vers unearthing her past. It's a nice change of pace and stakes. There's a lot going on in this movie which helps pacing. Not only is this a Captain Marvel origin, but we also get to see a young Nick Fury. There's a question as to who is really the bad guy and the movie handled that really well.
Even Agent Coulson from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series makes an appearance.
It's a fun movie that leans hard on nostalgia, there's a Blockbuster video story, lots of 90s music, and a few jabs at outdated technology. The soundtrack might be the best part of this movie.
The script has plenty of fun too with cats being a big part of a running joke.
Brie Larson also does a great job. Her cocky attitude as Marvel works well in the movie and she has a great camaraderie with Fury. I liked this a lot more than I expected.
There's a nice twist on the villains' goals and we do eventually uncover the mystery of Captain Marvel's powers. To kick off the big fight No Doubt's "I'm Just a Girl" starts up which is a bit pointed but also fits the music that's in the movie.
After watching this movie it's clear Captain Marvel is overpowered. While Endgame gave her the excuse of being busy, she still should have easily put Thanos down.

Thursday Movie Picks: Television Edition: Gangsters
Gangsters make for a fascinating topic, you can’t deny it. Reason why I love watching movies about them. It’s not the same when it comes to TV series though as I add these shows on my watchlist but, most of the time, never start them. So, yeah, this week of Wandering Through the Shelves’s Thursday Movie Picks was a tough one for me.
That said, I did manage to find three and here they are:
Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
After learning he has cancer, Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a high school chemistry teacher, teams up with Jesse (Aaron Paul), a former student of his turned criminal, and start making meth so that he has money to leave to his family once he’s gone. Walter is not your typical gangster but he sure is a great one. If you haven’t seen this show, please do yourself a favour and watch it.
Narcos (2015-2017)
It tells the story of the growth and spread of the drug cartel, specifically focusing on drug lord and family man Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) and the DEA agents trying to stop him. This is a very informative and entertaining show. And the men, man...Peaky Blinders (2013- )
It follows Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his gangster family challenged by the arrival of a ruthless copper (Sam Neill) who wants to clean up the city. I decided to watch it because of Cillian Murphy, but I fall in love with it. The script is fantastic and so is the setting. The performance from Murphy and Sam Neill are phenomenal, but my favourite part is the music, one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a TV series.
DAILY CALL SHEET: JUNE 26, 2019
Neighbors (1981) Belushi and Aykroyd switch types in this uncomfortable comedy. Once ignored, now slowly gaining a cult following. TIL: Loving thy neighbor is neither blind tolerance nor bluntly stating flaws. It is an an affirmation of their goodness and desiring good for them.
Still Voices - THX 1138 (1971) "There will never be a really free and enlightened State until the State comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and authority are derived, and treats him accordingly." - Henry David Thoreau
Dad Rock Daily: Cowsills - On My Side (1971) Dismiss this to your detriment. The kids are older and the music more mature. What bubblegum is left is laced with arsenic. Laudable Lyrics: The fool, well he just turned away and said "Who knows the answer?"

Plot
A family's serene beach vacation turns to chaos when their doppelgängers appear and begin to terrorize them.
Verdict
While it's a solid horror movie, it's the imminent twist that grabs you. This twist doesn't disappoint. It really changes the perspective on this movie. The implications of the twist are bigger than the movie.
I was waiting for that twist most of the movie which is good and bad. It's definitely worth it, but it made me feel like I was also just biding my time at points. The solid action and horror prevent this from ever approaching boring.
It's the ending that really makes this more than it is, effectively rewriting what the rest of this movie is about.
Watch it.
Review
The first scene throws us into a wild ride. It does feel a bit cliche that the daughter just wanders off like that. It's one thing to get distracted, but she goes into a scary fun house. I didn't quite buy that. The scene at first seems to be a send up of horror movies or just for effect, but it does have a purpose though we don't know the connection until later. This drops a couple clues about what might have happened in the fun house.
This throws out a lot of questions. When is this set? What happened to the girl that entered the fun house? How are these clones or doubles created? We then cut to a family going on vacation. This is a crazy trip when doubles of this family of four show up. The doubles don't just look similar, they look identical. "It's us."
These doubles seemingly want to replace the family and we soon learn this isn't an isolated event.
The movie does a great job of being creepy. From the look to the feel, it's effective. Lupita Nyong'o does an amazing job in the double role.
We're told what these doubles are even if it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They are indeed some kind of clone. The how about their existence isn't important to this story. There's no way to make sense of the logistics. The movie is here to make a point. It's about what the plot twist means.
This is social commentary packed into a slasher movie.
What's neat is that this movie makes the how completely irrelevant because of what these doubles mean. And what it means has a lot of power.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
What is the big twist? Red is Adelaide. In the fun house all those years ago, Red took Adelaide's place. While we see the doubles as nearly feral, living underground, Red was able to live a completely productive life by assuming the real Adelaide's identity. The clones, the tethered, are us. Given the tools to succeed, given they opportunity, they can be successful. That's when this movie dives into classicism.
That's underscored by adult Adelaide (actually Red) who is killing the tethered, her people, to keep what she has. Peele said in an interview, everything has a purpose and meaning. The tethered didn't have the opportunity, and thus couldn't succeed. I'm ascribing a lot to this, but Peele's first film Get Out (read my review) had a lot of meaning imbued. This is similar, tackling social issues through a horror movie. What happens when you have a subset of people that are forced to live underground without resources and opportunities? They don't succeed and this shows with opportunity they could thrive. Suppression leads to violence. Interesting that the real Adelaide led the revolt. She's the only tethered that can talk, but that also is part of getting back what she lost through this revolt.
