The Weekly Movie Watch Volume 21

This week I watched Blackfish, JCVD.

I watch movies every week and then write down my thoughts. Read my previous reviews!
My rating is simple, Watch It, It Depends, Skip it.

Tilikum in Blackfish
Blackfish - Some animals weren't meant for cages.
Blackfish (2013)

Written by: Gabriela Cowperthwaite & Eli B. Despres, Tim Zimmerman (co-writer)
Directed by: Gabriela Cowperthwaite
Starring: Tilikum
Rated: PG-13

This is a documentary about Tilikum, an Orca whale held captive by Seaworld. Tilikum was involved in the deaths of three humans. Commentary details the dangers of capture and captivity for not only humans, but the whales.

The film questions the morality of capturing and holding Orca whales. The problem is profits are used to justify the horrifying treatment of the Orcas. Even worse is the cover up and pleas of ignorance from Seaworld executives. Trainers aren't alerted to potential risks. A whale that has killed multiple people is still interacts with people. Orcas are incredibly smart and very social. To be put in a cage everyday, pulled out only to perform is mistreatment.
It depends.

Jean-claude Van Damme in JCVD
JCVD - Unlike any other Van Damme film.
JCVD (2008)
Watch JCVD
Written by: Mabrouk El Mechri (scenario) Frédéric Benudis (in collaboration with), Mabrouk El Mechri (adaptation and dialogue), Frédéric Taddeï and Vincent Ravalec (original idea), Christophe Turpin (writer)
Directed by: Mabrouk El Mechri
Starring: Jean-claude Van Damme
Rated: R

Jean-Claude Van Damme, playing himself, has fallen on hard times and becomes a hostage at a post office.

It's a great concept. The super hero we see on the screen is not the same person in life. In real life, Van Damme can't stop a hold-up, is fighting for child custody, and struggles for work against Steven Seagal. Only an over the hill action star could have made this film, and Van Damme did a great job. The monolog is a standout scene in a very good movie. The color grading is distracting, and I have no idea why it tinted so far yellow.
Buy it.
