When wrote about the nominations the first paragraph read as follows, which is exactly what I was thinking while watching the show last night.
"We tend to forget that the Golden Globe is an award given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, meaning that is a film critics award and as such, there are NO Academy members that also are HFPA associates. Still, for merely entertainment purposes we like to forget the fact so we can pretend that this is the second TV show (after the number one: The Oscars) that we "love/hate" to watch every year."
Yes if we look at the media coverage plus all the buzz and fuzz we realize that we crave for celebrities to entertain us and that's exactly what we got last night, a lot of entertainment and not much else. Still have to admit that fall asleep at least twice -if not more- as there was not much time for Tina and Amy Poehler moments which were sparse and scarce but laugh hard with some of their jokes, the best was the one about the husband of Amal Alamuddin.
But then believe there were not much surprises as awards seasons favorites won. The confusion with these awards is that they have to big categories Drama and Comedy/Musical, with MANY of the nominees in the second NOT exactly being comedies but give the excuse to honor one film and two actors more that will not get honored at Oscars. Still this year meant to be able to see most glamorous Jessica Chastain, always classy Helen Mirren and perhaps also, gracious Meryl Streep. and more, that we will not be able to see on Oscar's red carpet.
Usually I don't talk about television but this year I found myself getting more excited with some of the TV winners as Maggie Gyllenhall in The Honourable Woman is extremely well-deserved as well as Joanne Froggatt in Downtown Abbey.
This year I refuse to play the who won - who was snubbed game as believe that there are no surprises in last night awards ceremony with category favorites winning in the confusing drama or comedy big categories. Well, perhaps the major surprise was Ida not winning but I simply love the movies by Andrey Zvyagintsev since I met him in outstanding Izgnanie (The Banishment) so personaly, I do not mind at all even when I also love Pavel Pawlikowski's master opus.
So there is only one major film critics group awards pending, the Critics'Choice Movie Awards -that will be broadcast next Thursday- plus a more obscure major group, IPA in February, and the 2014 Critics' awards season is over another year.

Comments from Nominations on 12/11/2014
All right, it is also true that most of the GG nominees will also become Oscar nominees as by this time in the award season we all have an idea of who is who and who could get Oscar nominations. Still, today nominees gave some surprises, especially for the ones that are snubbed that the ones that got nominations. Then my spontaneous reaction to the live announcement in the acting categories was the idea that I have heard all the nominees just yesterday when SAG announced theirs.
In photo, the nominations presenters: Executive producer Barry Adelman, Greer Grammer, Miss Golden Globe 2015, Kate Beckinsale, Jeremy Piven, Paula Patton, Peter Krause and HFPA President Theo Kingma at the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards nominations on Thursday December 11, 2014 from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.
In the Best Motion Picture category there are 10 movies that surely not all will get an Oscar nomination as doubt Pride or St Vincent could get a nod which leaves spaces to be fill by major Golden Globe snubs like Unbroken, Interstellar and perhaps even Gone Girl. Talking about Gone Girl please notice that film has been absent in major film critics' awards but the nods in the Golden Globe reminds us that film still is an Oscar contender.
2014 is no exception as HPFA keeps the tradition to name films in genres that only them can believe, this year they claim that Maps to the Stars is a comedy!!! Of course it was convenient as seems they wanted to nominate Julianne Moore twice, one for Still Alice (a so-so movie) and for Maps to the Stars (not too bad, but still weak Cronenberg film) where perhaps Moore has a better performance than in Still Alice. I'm always impress with the acting categories as in a way assures that the red carpet will be interesting to say the least, just imagine Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain and more, all in one and the same TV show. Fantstic! Still can't deny that there is one actress that hope will get to present an award as definitively could miss her in the red carpet: Jennifer Lawrence that has become a very (positive) entertaining red carpet "performer". Most notable is the snub of Naomi Watts that when it comes to Academy members (SAG nominations) seems there is a "strong-love" for her performances which I do not understand at all.
From the foreign language category, I have to watch Estonia submission to Oscar that I have skipped but seems I should consider my decision and try to watch it as the movie has been collecting honors all over the world, including a Golden Globe nomination. It is impossible for me to consider this category without the Cannes Palme d'Or winner but imagine that the press -as well as general audiences- do not like long movies as their attention span tends to be on the short side of time. Sigh.
As a summary, Birdman leads the pack with seven (7) nominations followed by Boyhood and The Imitation Game with five (5) each. These nominations include a major milestone in the awards as well as in the Industry, the first-time ever that an African-American woman is nominated for Best Director. In general and after analyzing these nominations I continue to believe that the Oscar race is still open in many categories, even when we kind of confirm that the top award is an open race between Birdman and Boyhood.
