Donald Trump's The Art of the Deal: The Movie - This is parody done right. |
This Netflix exclusive is a parody of Donald Trump and his book The Art of the Deal by Funny or Die.
Verdict:
Johnny Depp plays Trump to great effect. From the start this movie knows exactly who Trump is and capitalizes on it at every moment. He's discriminatory, arrogant, and narcissistic. The premise is that this is a lost VHS tape, so the entire movie is fuzzy and distorted, which isn't as distracting as it may seem. Depp embodies Trump, and almost every line is a Trump-ism.
Watch it.
Review:
Don't let the poor image quality turn you off. This short movie is a spot on recreation of Trump. It's not like the writers had to create absurd dialog. Trump provides enough of that already, but surprisingly this was made last year before more recent 'inspiration.'
It's pure 80s in look and sensibilities as Trump walks a boy through his rules of the deal. Each rule is followed by a dated animation and sound clip. The premise of this is the 'very special episode' trope. The theme song is even performed by Kenny Loggins.
It's self aware with the movie in the movie. It skewers how Trump treats minorities, associates, and even his wife. The longer running time allows it to build the jokes in a way a short skit just doesn't allow. Depp does a great job as Trump there are plenty of cameos.
The ending veers towards the ridiculous, even for this, and then gets even wilder. This great skit is off the wall and over the top.
