Another Life Season 1 Netflix Series Review

        Another Life (2019-)
        Season 1 - 10 episodes (2019 July 25)
        Watch Another Life on Netflix
        Created by: Aaron Martin
Starring: Stars Katee Sackhoff, Selma Blair, Tyler Hoechlin, Justin Chatwin, Samuel Anderson, and Elizabeth Faith Ludlow.
        Rated: TV-MA
Watch the trailer & More Info

        Plot
Astronaut Niko Breckenridge (Katee Sackhoff) leads a crew on a mission to explore the genesis of an alien artifact. She and her crew face unimaginable danger on what may be a one-way mission.

        Verdict
The most fun I've had with this series is trying to guess all of the references. This takes tropes and ideas from other sci-fi properties liberally. That's not bad by itself, but that's all that's going on in the show. The science is dubious, the characters are flat, and there just isn't a unique draw. I watched the entire series, but that's because I'll watch even bad sci-fi.
        Skip it.

        Review
Aliens land on Earth, and a crew is formed to explore the origins of these mysterious beings. The crew is a bunch of socially inept astronauts. They don't get along. It's manufactured drama so something happens in the show and even if it isn't realistic, I'd think the characters would care more about the mission than hooking up. There's just a lot of stupid in this show. The plot resorts to romantic relationships instead of actually development.
        Katee Sackhoff plays Niko.
The premise has to be inspired by Arrival. There's a little bit of 2001, Aliens, Interstellar, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and much more. Some of the references are very apparent.
Surprisingly there doesn't seem to be any Battlestar Galactica. That's what I think of when I see Katee Sackhoff. It's terrible comparison for this show because Galactica had great character development and a plot.

While the crew runs into a disaster seemingly every episode, there are scientist back on Earth studying the object too. That plot line seems like filler until the last couple of episodes.

This series is a conglomeration of sci-fi movies I've seen before and would rather watch instead.

DAILY CALL SHEET: JULY 29, 2019

The Slime People (1964) Z-grade snoozer has an underground army attacking L.A. with fog while lots of folks stand and talk about it. TIL: In just war theory, “the fog of war” must never be used as an excuse for suggesting that warfare takes place beyond the reach of moral reason.

Still Voices - The Mutations (1974) "Make no mistake: God is not mocked, for a person will reap only what he sows." - Galatians 6:7

Dad Rock Daily: Chicago - Chicago VII There's an excellent EP here. Just be prepared to fend your way through twenty-five minutes of fusion to ferret it out. Laudable Lyrics: I've been searching so long to find an answer, now I know my life has meaning.

        About a Boy (2002)

Hugh Grant often plays such unlikeable characters — Bridget Jones's Diary, Two Weeks Notice, and Paddington, to name a few —, he has over the year become an actor I particularly dislike. His charm is undeniable though and since he's also quite a good actor, I figured I should check out more of his work. About a Boy was my first pick — Netflix has been shoving it on my face for the whole month — and I'm glad I gave it a shot because it is a funny, sweet and heartwarming feel-good film.

Based on Nick Hornby's novel of the same name, the story follows Will Freeman (Hugh Grant), a 38-year-old self-centred slacker who has liver comfortable off the royalties of a song written many years before by his now-deceased father and has never worked a day in his life.

The idea that he might be what single moms need comes across his mind, so he shows up at a Single Parents Alone Together meeting, and pretends to be a single father. As a result of a date with one of the single mothers, Suzie (Victoria Smurfit), Will meets Marcus (Nicholas Hoult), a 12-year-old vegetarian who lives with his depressed and hippie mother, Fiona (Toni Collette) and is constantly made fun of at school because he's different. When Fiona attempts suicide, Marcus realises that two people are not enough and sets out to pull Will into the equation.

It's a fairly simple story whose outcome is clichéd and predictable as it's the personal epiphany kind of story that we have seen many times before. Thankfully, the bullet was dodged as the intelligent screenplay is filled with intriguing and well-developed characters.

Will is a lazy, shallow, manipulative, self-absorbed man with a fear of commitment who invents a son to hit on single mothers as he believes them to be more desperate than he is. He is a very unresponsible and unlikeable character and yet we warm to him because, unlike it happens most of the time, there's no sudden change of heart toward the end in Will; it's rather a process, a slow growth. We witness his coming-of-age as his relationship with Marcus develops.

Marcus is a shy, nerdy, socially awkward kid who is constantly bulliled because of the hippie lifestyle his mother has forced on him and his quirk of singing out loud without even realizing it. On top of that, he has to deal with and take care of his depressed mother, which is definitely too much to ask for to a 12-year-old. He's a real kid with real problems, reason why we care for him.

Fiona, although she has very limited screentime, makes for a compelling character too. She doesn't have a lot of characterization but her development makes her so interesting. As expected, she does change at the end of the film; however, she doesn't go straight from point A to point B but takes many detours along the way — whenever she is about to recover, she always goes back to the starting point.

The only character I found a bit underwhelming was Rachel Weisz's Rachel. Although Will's relationship with her is different from his past, meaningless, shallow ones and it's because of this romance that we realise Will is growing up, it felt as if both the character and the romantic subplot was underdone — and I would have probably forgotten about it if it wasn't for Weisz in the role.

About a Boy isn't just well written, it's also filled with great performances from its cast. Hugh Grant give arguably his best performance ever as he brings to the character of Will a depth, a complexity I haven't seen before. He is charismatic as usual but he doesn't come off as pretentious or obnoxious; instead, he's rather likeable and we soon find ourselves sympathizing with him as he slowly takes off Will's mask of superficiality and insecurity. His very expressive face does wonder when it comes to conveying Will's emotions — whether it's anger, selfishness, or hurt — but it's the way he handles the comedy, making you laugh throughout either with a witty line or a weird facial expression, that will win you over.

The rest of the cast provides Grant more than solid support. Although he struggles a bit as he has too much weight to carry, a young Nicholas Hoult is believable as Marcus, the sky, awkward kid who befriends Will and manages the emotional side egregiously. In addition, the chemistry he has with Grant is outstanding which makes their interactions a real pleasure to watch. Toni Collette is good as Marcus's mother, Fiona, although her performance could/would have been great if she was given some of the film's comedy. Rachel Weisz really makes the best of her small, underused role with yet another brilliant performance of hers.

About a Boy also has a great balance between comedy and drama. As a result, the film manages to make you laugh with its witty and clever humour and touch your heart. The score by Badly Drawn Boy is very fitting and enhances even more the emotions conveyed by the actors.

Also noteworthy is the film's narrative style, the often hated because impersonal, cold voice-over. It's not your typical voice-over though, it's a double voice-over which is very nice as it's often the source of humour and gives us an insight on Will and Marcus's thoughts.

76th Venice International Film Festival Lineup

Somehow was able to enjoy yesterday's press conference as even if rhythm was on the slower side, eventually the end was near and finally were able to learn the films in La Mostra competition. My very-spontaneous reaction was feeling this year fest will be as exciting as last year and yes, more interesting than Cannes. This is great but you know me, I'm crazy about French cinema, so wish the French festival will pickup the past glory, leave controversies behind to become more "independent", sigh. Well, but for now, is all about the Italian festival with great movies from around the world becoming not only the Oscars predictor but the one to be consider as the leading force in world cinema

Before getting into post matter, wish to share an extraordinary and outstanding fact about a country with no cinema continuous-trajectory that suddenly is catapulting into remarkable milestones. As far as was able to check from historic info, this is the first time Guatemala has one movie in each of the three major film festivals in the world in the same year. First was Berlinale in Panorama Section with Temblores by Jayro Bustamante, then Cannes Semaine de la Critique and Camera d'Or winner, Nuestras Madres by Cesar Diaz and now is Jayro Bustamante's La Llorona in Venice Days. Remarkable!!!

Because I find it rather inspiring here is an excerpt from Alberto Barbera, Director of the Venice International Film Festival, introduction the fest and his part of his opening remarks at yesterday's press conference.

There is no longer a rigid, unambiguous definition of what cinema is and what it isn't – assuming that that's what it ever was: André Bazin had already stood up for “impure” cinema as opposed to the cold rigour of the purists (and it was only the 1950s) – but a free and adventurous resolve to set sail without knowing where the journey will lead. I believe that this may be the most effective metaphor to evoke the spirit that guided us in putting together this year's line-up. The risk that we consciously took was to appear lacking in direction, and bound to an indulgent conception of cinema. This might very well be the most appropriate way to interrogate cinema, which in the eyes of many appears to be dangerously lost, or threatened and beleaguered by the dominance of other media that coexist with it within the galaxy of integrated communication. Yet, despite the signs that seem to converge towards a dystopic vision of the future, we are tempted to forcefully assert that this is not the threat of extinction, but rather a process of transformation in the making that is one of the most radical in the short-lived existence of cinema, at the end of which it will undoubtedly be different from what we have known and loved until now, but alive and vital, advancing new issues and languages and forms that we will become accustomed to with the speed that distinguishes our time.

Wish many in the industry could share his views and will be open to change in the traditional business model.

Above festival poster was designed again by Lorenzo Mattotti where we also learn that the fest will run from August 28 to September 7, 2019.   Already announced are the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievent to Pedro Almodóvar for "the contribution made through his body of work to the advancement of the art of cinema" and a second Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Julie Andrews.

Again this year La Mostra has no issues with Neflix as two of its most awaited films, Laudromat by Steven Soderbergh and Marriage Story by Noah Baumbachare are in the main Competition. Great!  as still LOVE the fact of being able to watch great films with not the inconveniences of waiting until the cinema-industry-window system decides I can see it. Thinking about the competition, there are 21 films in the competition, even when section description say maximum is 20; so, go figure.  Out of those films, only 2 are by female directors which is NOT the norm anymore as festivals make an effort to include female directors in their main competitions.  Most interesting is the presence of one animated film and one documentary in the lineup, which is not usual at all.

No matter the politics or if lineup is politically correct, the truth is the 2019 competition is fantastic with many outstanding directors showcasing their latest creations and to my surprise, there are quite many great actors in this edition. So, yes, red carpet events will be very interesting (!).  Come on, not often (if ever) you can see Catherine Deneuve and Juliete Binoche together together in the red carpet, then in other days,  Meryl Streep, Gong Li, Penélope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Liv Tyler plus also, Brad Pitt (!) and I'm mentioning only actors in the competition as we already know that in other sections there are films with Kristen Stewart, Lily-Rose Depp plus probably, Monica Bellucci and Cécile de France.

Talking about Lily-Rose Depp, she is in David Michôd's The King (also a Netflix film) co-staring with Robert Pattinson who co-stars with her father in Ciro Guerra's Waiting for the Barbarians. So Pattinson has 2 films in Venice and will once again meet with Kristen Stewart.  Enough entertaiment, lol!

The festival will run from August 28 to September 7 and this year there will be an anteprima again; the pre-openning event is the screening of the 1934 film-scandal Extase (Ectasy) by Gustav Machatý in the world premiere of a new restored 4K digital copy, starring very-young Hedy Kieslev who eventually became none other than Hedy Lamarr!  Most interesting is the review done by young Michelangelo Antonioni, who came to 1934 Venice fest as a film critic, here is an excerpt: «In the garden of the Excelsior, that night, you could hear the breathing of the enthralled viewers, you could feel the shiver running through the audience».

In the competition there are a few master filmmakers like Roy Andersson, Olivier Assayas, or Kore-eda Hirokazu; but, perhaps there are more good contemporary -and young- directors like Pablo Larrain, Noah Baumbach, Haifaa Al-Mansour, Ye Lou, Ciro Guerra among others.  It's not what we can call "traditional line-up" as it tends to go to the younger spectrum of the industry where visions have more modern touch.  I find it interesting but is not until their films are screened when there will be a better what the fest is or is not.

This year organizers saw a total of 3,621 films; out of this total 1,833 were feature films, 1,627 short films and 161 VR films.

These are the films in current edition.  Female filmmakers are in BLUE.
