Yesterday watched live the announcement and believe there were not many unexpected surprises, perhaps the only shocking omission was on the TV side as outstanding Succession got NO nominations, absurd. Sigh.
Nominees for the 2020 SAG awards for outstanding individual, cast and ensemble performances in film and television of 2019, as well as the nominees for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles, were announced yesterday at the Pacific Design Center's SilverScreen Theater in West Hollywood.SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris introduced America Ferrera and Danal Gurira, who announced the nominees for current edition live on TV and major social platforms. Before that annoucement, JoBeth Williams and Elizabeth McLaughlin announced the nominees for this year's stunt ensemble action performance.
After going in depth noticed Scarlett Johansson got 3 nominations, not 2 as my tweet says; but she gets 2 in individual categories which no other actor does in film or TV. Nevertheless there are several actors that get 3 nominations considering film and TV, Margot Robbie, Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Olivia Colman, Scarlett Johansson and only one man, Al Pacino.
Among the nominee fun facts we find two parents and their children nominated, Bruce Dern and his daughter Laura Dern; Eugene Levi father of Daniel Levy and Sarah Levy. Most remarkable is the fact that there are two nominees that portrait the same person: Roger Alies, as John Lithgow in Bombshell and outstanding Russel Crowe in The Loudest Voice (Crowe was the most disgusting character I have seen since ... can't remember, he's so good that his amazing performance made me really sick). On the serious side, there are two posthumous nominations, Luke Perry and Brian Tarantina.
There is no clear leader among films but definitively the pack leader is Netflix with 7 nominations in film and 13 in TV for a total of 20 SAG nominations. No other studio nor network comes close to Netflix. Nevertheless, there are 3 films with 4 nominations each, Bombshell, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood.
Undoubtedly the most notable fact is that's been 21 years since a foreign-language film first landed a best cast nomination and in this edition the cast of Parasite becomes the second to land a coveted spot for the top prize. Rarely has an Oscar best picture winner prevailed without landing a SAG ensemble nomination, although last year Oscar winner Green Book did not; also, when Roma did not got a SAG ensemble nomination many considered a a blow to its Oscar chances. So, it's encouraging that perhaps besides getting a nomination, a foreign-language film could win the top Oscar; but, let's wait to see if Parasite could get SAG top award and then speculate its chances.
