Freddy Is Ready For A 3D Sequel! Warner Rakes in $32m Opening Weekend

Jim here. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is going 3D according to Warner Bros. (via The Wrap). Based on the outstanding numbers from the opening weekend with the newly rebooted franchise, the New Line property (now Warners) will have a 3D sequel prepped.

NIGHTMARE has done an estimated $32.2m this weekend.

"We don't have a story yet, but this is the largest horror opening in the April-May corridor, and it just proves there's a lot left in the franchise," said Warner distribution president Dan Fellman.

NIGHTMARE is being shown on 4,700 screens at 3,332 locations (the numbers include a midnight opening of around $1.6 million).

I saw it last night and there is no question they are making Freddy out to be a seriously bad villain. Seriously bad. Jackie Earle Haley did a half decent job of pulling off Freddy - hard shoes to fill. The quality of the shots were good and in some places quite imaginative. It did drag a bit at times and could have used some better pacing. I won't give any spoilers though - see it for yourself. The only big thing missing? 3D of course!
