The Weekly Movie Watch Volume 28

This week I watched The Zero Theorem, 300: Rise of an Empire, Elite Squad, Non-stop.

I watch movies every week and then write down my thoughts. Read my previous reviews!
My rating is simple, Watch It, It Depends, Skip it.

movie The Zeor Theorem
The Zero Theorem - The depth is only matched by the bizarre.
The Zero Theorem (2013)
Watch The Zero Theorem
Written by: Pat Rushin (screenplay), Terry Gilliam (additional dialog)
Directed by: Terry Gilliam
Starring: Christoph Waltz, Lucas Hedges, Melanie Thierry
Rated: R

Plot:
A man afraid of everything wants to work from home, while trying to determine his purpose in life.

Review:
A man lives in a secluded, burned down church amidst futuristic buildings. He is afraid of everything and experiences nothing, wondering why he exists. He is focused on his work, not caring what he does or why, but working to pass the time hoping the meaning of life will come to him. His faith is so acute he ignores distractions. He believes one phone call he missed in his youth, will call again and provide him with his purpose. In the end he realizes that work or a phone call cannot make him happy, it will not provide meaning.
For most people this movie is too bizarre and the plot is too far removed from normal.
It depends, but only if you like the bizarre. It's not easy to grasp.

movie 300: Rise of an Empire
300: Rise of an Empire - It's like 300, but unnecessary.
300: Rise of an Empire (2014)
Watch 300: Rise of an Empire
Written by: Zach Snyder & Kurt Johnstad (screenplay), Frank Miller (graphic novel "Xerxes)
Directed by: Noam Murro
Starring: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, Rodrigo Santoro
Rated: R

Plot:
Themistokles must repel Artemisia and the Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes.

Review:
Another unnecessary sequel. While the original 300 pushed style over substance, this movie has less style and substance. The creators tried so hard to recapture the first movie that they set this during the exact same time period. Despite the eye candy ploy of Eva Green there is little of interest. The first movie while stylistically unique had a compelling story, and this simply isn't and doesn't.
Skip it.

movie Elite Squad
Elite Squad - Stopping criminals and corrupt cops in the war zone of Brazil.
Elite Squad aka Tropa de Elite (2007)
Watch Elite Squad
Written by: André Batista, Rodrigo Pimentel, Luiz Eduardo Soares (book), Bráulio Mantovani, José Padilha, Rodrigo Pimentel

Directed by: José Padilha
Starring: Wagner Moura , André Ramiro , Caio Junqueira
Rated: R

Plot:
It's difficult to distinguish cops from criminals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When the violence in the slums becomes too much for the police, they call in the Elite Squad.

Review:
The movie does a thorough job of detailing what is wrong with the police force, and at the same time the problems faced. This causes it to drag a bit, at least for an action movie. Though, through this characters are developed. It's a harsh movie. Cops have to be more ruthless than the drug dealers they hunt, and it is a hunt. It's a culture shock compared to America. It's very raw and doesn't feel far removed from documenting what actual conditions may be. Corruption runs rampant and the police force is outnumbered, so cops can't stop crime. They instead make peace. The Elite Squad are the type of cops needed to halt the proliferation of crime.
It depends.

movie Non-stop
Non-stop - The terrorists prepared for everything, everything except Liam Neeson.
Non-stop (2014)
Watch Non-stop
Written by: John W. Richardson & Christopher Reach and Ryan Engle (screenplay), John W. Richardson & Christopher Reach (story)
Directed by: Jaume Collet-Serra
Starring: Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery, Corey Stoll, Lupita Nyong'o, Anson Mount
Rated: PG-13

Plot:
When threatened by terrorists, Liam Neeson, an air marshal, must save the lives of everyone on the plane.

Review:
Liam Neeson has a particular set of skills, and he's nearly created his own genre. It's a thrilling movie, with a few twists and mysteries. Forgiving the unrealistic aspects, it falls apart at the end with flimsy villains.
Skip it.

65th Annual ACE EDDIE Awards Winners

Last night the group had their black-tie ceremony where trophies were handed out in ten categories of film, television and documentary.

Award-winning filmmaker Frank Marshall received the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year, Career Achievement Awards went to industry veterans Diane Adler and Jerry Greenberg. The Robert Wise Award, which has only been presented a few times in the organization history, was presented to journalist Carolyn Giardina of The Hollywood Reporter.

If one movie I do believe deserves an editing award for job well done is Boyhood as is hard to imagine the amount of material an editor has to deal after 12 years of filming and how figure out how much story time to give to each age and body-change of the protagonist.  The movie won Best Edited Drama.

Cast

Anne Parillaud, Tchéky Karyo, Marc Duret, Patrick Fontana, Rolande Blanche, Alain Lathière, Jeanne Moreau, Philippe Leroy, Jean-Hugues Anglade, Jean Reno

Plot

Nikita (Anne Parillaud) is a teenage junkie who participates in the robbery of a pharmacy owned by a friend's parents. The robbery goes awry, and she kills several policemen.
Sentenced to life in prison, Nikita is given a new identity and trained as a top secret assassin.

Opinion

Nikita wasn't up to my expectations. The story, with a promising beginning, is way too flat, and lacks of tension required by an action/thriller film.
Luc Besson uses the cinecamera masterfully, and the first scenes of the film are really beautiful and strong.
Anne Parillaud, sweet yet ruthless, delivers an incredible performance loaded with charm. Jeanne Moreau as Amande and Jean Reno as Victor leave a mark, even though they have a small part.

New Behind The Scenes Shots From 40 BELOW AND FALLING!

Here's a couple more shots from the set of 40 BELOW AND FALLING that I'm producing along with Andrew Scholotiuk, Darren Arsenault, Corinne Ferguson, Pierre-Andre Rochat. The Director is Dylan Pearce who I leave alone now as much as I can as he is obviously focused on delivering his vision in 3D of course and 4K!

That snowmobile you see in the first shot plays a very key role in the movie and it's cool to see it in the flesh rather than read about it in the script! You can see Shawn Roberts (Redford) behind it with the boom mic extended - a chilly day but rewarding for all.

The second shot is of Jewel Staite (Kate) outfitted in a formal gown. Being shot in Edmonton and it's Northern Alberta region, it's definitely brisk in winter; but as we know and many, many other productions, that country is simply gorgeous. And the story demands it! Can't wait for you to see it.

It's extremely interesting to be a part of the mechanism behind making a movie and this crew is absolutely top notch. And day to day planning is of utmost concern especially with an outdoors winter production. For those of you not in the know, we get daily Call Sheets outlining everything you can imagine from call times to set requirements to locations all methodically laid out and in order. It's wonderful to see it all come together so elegantly.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Starring high in demand Canadian actress Jewel Staite (series regular on Joss Whedon’s hit TV show Firefly and his feature film Serenity, and star of the AMC/Netflix drama series The Killing) and Canadian actor Shawn Roberts (star in the hit movie franchise Resident Evil, co-star in Edge of Darkness, and X-Men) – 40 Below and Falling tells the story of Kate Carter, a teacher from a small, Northern Canadian town, who is moving back to the big city for her wedding. After quitting her job and packing up her life, Kate feels certain that this is the future she has always wanted – that is until her flight gets cancelled by a blizzard and she meets a surly stranger named Redford. With all road travel being suspended, Kate is forced to hop on the back of Redford’s snowmobile and embark on an adventure that will leave her questioning the decision she has made about the man she is set to marry.

For the full boilerplate for the movie, be sure to check it out here. More cool stuff when I can get it for you - stay tuned!

Ang Lee To Tackle BILLY LYNN'S LONG HALFTIME WALK In Native 3D 4K HFR!

(Photo) Jim Dorey. 2013.

When Ang Lee tackles a project he gives it his all and in this case the project is Ben Fountain's novel BILLY LYNN'S LONG HALFTIME WALK and he is going to shoot it in native 3D 4K and ultra high frame rate.

When I spoke to Ang awhile back he told me that he's excited to work with 3D and having it available to him for projects - and now that we know what his next 3D project will be, my eyes lit up.

As Lee did with LIFE OF PI, he will be leaping over new technological and creative barriers. To help him do so he's hired one of the best in Demetri Portelli (HUGO, 47 RONIN, THE YOUNG AND PRODIGIOUS T.S. SPIVET) and his team to handle the stereoscopic 3D. They'll be using Sony F65 cameras and the word is Lee's vision is breathtaking. As if you are really there. Think the D-Day scenes in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN but add in perfect immersive 3D shot in 4K and ultra high frame rate. Of course I'm sure Lee has many more surprises for us! Can't wait for this.

Here's the storyline courtesy of Variety:
Bravo Company and 19-year-old private Billy Lynn survive a harrowing Iraq battle that is captured by news cameras. They are brought home by the U.S. administration for a promotional tour, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of a Thanksgiving Day football game, all while facing an imminent return to the war. Almost the entire movie takes place during the day of the game, with flashes back to the underlying events and Billy’s heroism.

This is a filmmaker driven project that is original and you simply know that care will be taken to present it in new and spectacular ways. More info when we get it!

Eden Lake (2008)

Genre

Director

Country

Cast

Kelly Reilly, Michael Fassbender, Jack O'Connell, James Gandhi, Thomas Turgoose, Bronson Webb, Shaun Dooley, Finn Atkins, Thomas Gill, James Burrows

Plot

Jenny (Kelley Reilly) and her boyfriend, Steve (Michael Fassbender), escape their everyday life to a remote lake in the green English countryside.
Their quiet weekend falls apart when a gang of kids, which have fun in provoking adults, first insult them and then steal their car. The situation gets worse when Steve decides to face them.

Opinion

Eden Lake is a dark and bloody horror/thriller film, somewhat realistic. In his directorial debut, James Watkins has managed to create real suspense and some real horror. The cynical ending proves the like father like son proverb.
The young actors do a fantastic job for their age, with a special mention for Jack O'Connell, the gang leader. The two leading actors, Kelley Reilly and Michael Fassbender, are brilliant.
I highly recommend it, but if you are a weak-hearted you better not watch it, mainly because of the detailed sadistic sequences.

Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013)

Original Title

La Vie d'Adèle - Chapitres 1 & 2

Genre

Director

Country

Cast

Léa Seydoux, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Salim Kechiouche, Aurélien Recoing, Catherine Salée, Benjamin Siksou, Mona Walravens, Alma Jodorowsky, Jérémie Laheurte, Anne Loiret, Benoît Pilot, Sandor Funtek, Fanny Maurin, Maelys Cabezon, Stéphane Mercoyrol, Aurelie Lemanceau

Plot

Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos) is an introverted high-school student whose classmates gossip constantly about boys. While crossing the street one day, she passes by a woman with short blue hair (Léa Seydoux) and is instantly attracted. She dates a boy (Jérémie Laheurte)at her school for a short while and they have sex, but she is ultimately dissatisfied and breaks off their relationship. After having vivid fantasies about the woman she saw on the street and having one of her female friends behave flirtatiously towards her, she becomes troubled about her sexual identity.

Opinion

Blue Is the Warmest Colour is a wonderful and emotional film about life, love and sexuality. This film has made quite a stir for the lesbian sex scene lasted 10 minutes, on the edge of eroticism, but also the most powerful and sweet in the entire history of cinema.
Both Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux were sensational, and the film deserves to be watched only for their performances.
I am really disappointed this film wasn't nominated for best foreign film, and Adèle Exarchopoulos wasn't nominated for best actress in a leading role at the Academy Awards.

Quotes

Emma: But I have infinite tenderness for you. I always will. My whole life.

Adèle: I miss you. I miss not touching each other. Not seeing each other, not breathing in each other. I want you. All the time. No one else.

Winter's Tale (2014)

Genre

Director

Country

Cast

Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, Russell Crowe, William Hurt, Mckayla Twiggs, Eva Marie Saint, Will Smith, Ripley Sobo, Matt Bomer, Lucy Griffiths, Finn Wittrock, Kevin Corrigan, Kevin Durand

Plot

Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) is a thief a thief raised by a supernatural demon posing as the gangster Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe).
After disappointing his mentor, on the run, Peter encounters a white horse that points him in the direction of the Penn mansion. Initially looking to steal something, he changes his mind when he meets and falls in love with Beverly (Jessica Brown Findlay), the beautiful daughter of the homeowner.

Opinion

Many critics said this film was a huge fail, so I wasn't expecting a lot for it. But you know what? I loved it. Based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Mark Helprin, Winter's Tale is a good film of its genre, and moved me. The story is lightly told, and its 118 minutes slip away like a bird in flight.
Colin Farrell is wonderful: he is perfect in the role of the thief who falls in love. You can clearly see he puts himself entirely in the characters he plays; Russell Crowe's character Pearly Soames, obsessed with Farrell's, reminds me a bit of Javert (Les Misérables), the evil version of course. He didn't impress me though.

Peter Lake: Don't know who's more foolish; The horse who won't listen to his master or the master who listens to his horse.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Eying $1 Billion - Opens To $50m In China!

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES has opened to $49.5m in China which is just about as much as the first Hobbit movie made during it's entire run in the country! Goes to show the recognition that the movie brings now to the Chinese as well as the further development of the theater industry there - especially 3D. With FIVE ARMIES being made in native 3D with world leading 3ality Technica rigs, these box office results underscore what great movie making can achieve.

Peter Jackson's finale to the Hobbit trilogy has raked in $866 million worldwide as of now and as China is it's last major market the echos of the release may be enough to push it to the magic billion dollar mark despite being obviously snubbed by the Academy for Oscars this year. The movie only managed to be nominated for Sound Editing. How it is not at least nominated for Visual Effects is beyond me.

Will THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES hit $1 billion? Will we ever return to Middle-earth again any time soon? I'd dearly love to see some spin offs from these movies - character origins stories, adventures and the like. I doubt the Tolkien estate would allow it, but there would definitely be a huge market for it. Even a bridge movie bringing Legolas together with Strider as described at the end of the movie would be huge.

Can't wait to get the extended trilogy versions on Blu-ray! All the behind the scenes action is what I really enjoy in these boxed sets. Stay tuned for further box office updates!

2015 Guldbagge Awards Winners

Yesterday they had the Awards Ceremony and had the opportunity to see a few minutes but unfortunately had to stop watching. Nevertheless what I saw was really refreshing and very different to what we usually see as cinema shows or awards ceremonies.

Force Majeure swept the awards with 6 wins, including Best Film and Roy Andersson's film got only one. Liv Ullman who last week was presented with an Honorary Dragon Award at the Göteborg International Film Festival was the recipient of the 2015 Swedish Lifetime Achievement Award.

Today the Swedish Film Institute announced the nominations for the 51st Annual Guldbagge Awards and to the surprise of many, Gentlemen leads the pack with 13 nominations to become the most nominated film in the history of this award.

Oscar shortlisted Force Majeure follows with 10 nods and 2014 Golden Lion winner A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence with 7 nominations.

Best Film
En duva satt på en gren och funderade på tillvaron (A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence)
Gentlemen
*Turist (Force Majeure)

Best Director
Mikael Marcimain for Gentlemen
Roy Andersson for En duva satt på en gren och funderade på tillvaron (A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence)
*Ruben Östlund for Turist (Force Majeure)

Best Actress
Lisa Loven Kongsli in Turist (Force Majeure)
*Saga Becker in Nånting måste gå sönder (Something Must Break)
Vera Vitali in Min så kallade pappa (My So-Called Father)

Best Actor
David Dencik in Gentlemen
Johannes Bah Kuhnke in Turist (Force Majeure)
*Sveririr Gudnason in Flugparken

To read nominees in other categories go official site here. Most interesting is the movie Something Must Break as the nominated actress plays a dual role (male/female) and story which I imagine has to have a very Scandinavian style could be good. Seems that will have to check Gentlemen by Mikael Marcimain (remember Call Girl) which is another period drama from Stockholm in the '70s.

Awards ceremony hosted by Petra Mede will be on January 26 at Cirkus arena in Stockholm with SVT broadcasting the ceremony live and as in previous years there will be a live streaming.

First Look: Teaser Trailer For FANTASIC FOUR Hits

I think Fox's FANTASTIC FOUR may have finally got it right. They certainly have the right director in Josh Trank (CHRONICLE) and cast with Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Toby Kebbell. Obviously it's hard to get an understanding from just a teaser, but my impression is that the story is having a lot of attention paid to it this time around.

Matthew Vaughn (KICK ASS, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE) is a Producer on this movie as well giving FANTASTIC FOUR a fine pedigree indeed. I think we are finally in for a treat with this franchise.

Here's the storyline:
FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

FANTASTIC FOUR opens in theaters August 7, 2015

January Expiration Watch: Not So Bad (if you don't count the BBC)

For a lot of you, this month's expiration story boils down to only one headline: All Those BBC TitlesGone!

But wrenching as that is, it's become something of an old story already, and now that many of us have had time to work our way through shock, denial, and into acceptance (sort of), there's another story being told this monthone that's peculiar and a bit less devastating. It's the tale of 52 notable, non-BBC titles leaving the service by the 1st of February, a full 31 of which arrived within the last three monthssuggesting a chronic case of premature (ahem) expiration on the part of Netflix.

But here's the good news: the bulk of those recent additions aren't exactly what you'd call masterpieces, while the rest seem to pop off and on Instant with the regularity of blinking neon in an old film noir. Here's what we're looking at, broken down by month:

Arrived in November

Batman Returns (1992)
Babes in Toyland (1961)
Breakheart Pass (1975)
The 'Burbs (1989)
The Crimson Cult (1968)
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)
Hiding Out (1987)
Kingpin (1996)

Cast

Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, Giorgio Cantarini, Giustino Durano, Horst Buchholz, Amerigo Fontani, Raffaella Lebbroni, Sergio Bustric, Lydia Alfonsi, Pietro De Silva, Marisa Paredes, Claudio Alfonsi, Alessandro Nardi, Giuliana Lojodice, Francesco Guzzo, Gina Rovere, Gil Baroni, Franco Mescolini

Plot

1930's in Fascist Italy. Guido Orefice (Roberto Benigni), a Jewish Italian bookshop owner, courts and marries Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), a woman from a nearby city. They have a son, Giosuè (Giorgio Cantarini) and live happily together until the German occupation of Italy.
In attempt to help his son survive the horrors of the Concentration Camp, Guido tells his son that the Holocaust is a game and the winner takes a tank.

Opinion

Never before I've seen a film that symbolizes its name and its message so good. Life Is Beautiful is an unforgettable film, not about the Holocaust, but about love, optimism and inner strength. It is about seeing the other side of things, the surreal and funny side.
Roberto Benigni, which in my opinion is the best Italian director, is capable of bringing to the screen a dramatic story, that not only makes you cry but also makes you laugh. It is amazing the way he talks with the child, and the peace and pain message he transmits is wonderful.
If you haven't already, I highly recommend you to watch this movie. If you have and you liked it, I may suggest you another great Benigni's film, The Tiger and the Snow.
