The awards ceremony took place last Sunday, January 6, 2019 and couldn't watch it live as now I live in a time zone that is deep-night when all American shows take place. But I recorded the local version of the show and watch it yesterday only to find that show was more on the dull side than in the entertainment end of the scale. Sigh.
Nevertheless there were a few (too-few) moments where winners and surely audiences (went back to check twitter -lol-) were really surprised as these journalist group behaved quite different from what cinema pundits were expecting and what film critics have been doing during the current award season. That was what I found entertaining as jokes were too dumb or let's be kinder, not the kind of humor I enjoy which as many of you know, is dark, really dark humor.
In general was pleased with TV awards, even when gave one too-many award to an old school show in Netflix but when reviewing film categories, winners really blew my mind but then realized that all started with the nominations as, for example, the five best drama nominees were unusual to say the least with two films that could be more musical than drama. This allows us to understand what some said and I totally agree, Green Book should have win Best Drama and Bohemian Rhapsody Best Musical!
Actually I would have preferred if group recognized the magnificent body of work and his outstanding latest film of young master filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos. But then group decided The Favourite was a comedy/musical and not a drama! Go figure. But my point is made, problem started with the nominations. Sigh.
Still we have to recall that no matter the amount of buzz these awards generate they reflect the opinion of journalists and NOT industry members as they are not involved with the filmmaking industry and not all write about films, they are more representative of audiences than anything else. So, Oscars nominations could go a completely different way than the Globes and even than film critics as this year there is a relevant interrupter that has many industry members scrambling for what to do as Alfonso Cuaron is a well-known multiple award-winner director (in English-language films) and Roma is absolutely the opposite to what prevails in the American film industry.

12/7/18
Yesterday's morning the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and once again this year there is controversy about what group calls comedy as films in the best comedy (or musical) category are no comedies even when could generate one or two laughs.
For starters it's almost impossible for me to imagine Yorgos Lanthimos doing a comedy and even do The Favourite has been called a "sex comedy" or "a different kind of comedy" believe that film is a serious female-driven extraordinary drama, perhaps showered with very-witty dialogues around search of power struggles. But then, what do I know, sigh. Similar reasoning -without the female orientation- applies to Green Book and Vice which obviously are dramas, period. Then this year they had two music intensive pics that definitively could have been more in the Musical category than in drama; yes, talking about A Star is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody, even when I know HFPA rules where changed to prevent music-based biopics entered as musicals, but what the heck, they're more musicals than what group called comedies. Sigh.
More that honored films are the snubs as in Best Drama category, Roma is missing but recall film is Spanish and only English films qualify; still, films like Eighth Grade, First Reformed, Widows and others that are Oscar contenders were ignored in this category. There are more snubs in other film categories but surely the more noticeable is the fact that once again there is no female director honored; so, their record stays intact, only 5 women in the 76 years of the Golden Globes history have been nominated for Best Director. Last check the foreign language category as there is NO Cold War nor Burning instead there are two films submitted to Oscars by Germany and Belgium, with the last being the object of great controversy in American press as is labelled as "dangerous" to the transgender community/movement; seems like they were clearing the way for Roma as ignored two strong Oscar contenders that surely will get an Oscar nomination.
Undoubtedly the wealth has been spread all over as it's Vice the film that leads with only 6 nominations followed very close by The Favourite, Green Book, A Star is Born with 5 each plus BlacKkKlansman and Mary Poppins Returns with 4 each. Perhaps more interesting are the nominations by distributor as Annapurna Pictures and Fox Searchlight Pictures have 10 noms each.
As always have to remind everyone that this is a group of film critics/journalists representing 55 countries and for sure, not Academy members; so, how much will these noms influence AMPAS voters? Not much. Still, TV show is a lot more fun-to-watch than Oscars TV show -which thankfully Oscars will have a different host than the one they announced a couple of days ago-.
Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg will host the 2019 ceremony on January 6th and the 2019 Golden Globes Ambassador is Isan Elba, daughter of Idris Elba.
The following are the Motion Picture nominations. To check all nominees, including TV categories, go official site here.
