THE MARTIAN Set To Overtake GLADIATOR As Ridley Scott's Top Box Office Draw

Ridley Scott has to be smiling broadly right now as his 3D space adventure THE MARTIAN continues to hold on to first place at the box office. In fact the Matt Damon starrer will overtake GLADIATOR as the top box office draw in all of Scott's releases sometime this week. THE MARTIAN currently stands at $182m and GLADIATOR did $188m worth of business back in 2000.

THE MARTIAN only dropped 27% this past weekend for an estimated take of $11.4m. Couple that with the bombs of SCOUT'S GUIDE, OUR BRAND IS CRISIS and BURNT (which I thought was very good) and voila - Martian Victory. Trouble is definitely on the horizon though as SPECTRE looms large this Friday. The latest James Bond installment just set records over in the UK during it's opening there. It'll open to huge business here as well and will hold it until THE HUNGER GAMES closes up shop with part 2 of MOCKINGJAY.

So congratulations to Ridley Scott for his achievement and continued success with 3D. An amazing accomplishment! Looking forward to ALIEN: PARADISE LOST and more native 3D from Scott and 3ality!!

3D Movie Review: THE MARTIAN: 9.3 Stars - Scott's Triumphant Vision Soars!

Spoiler-free, in case you haven't seen it yet and want an opinion.

I don't think there are enough superlatives to describe director Ridley Scott's spectacular take on a magnificent novel (one that you should seek out and read). The movie is not perfect, but masterfully crafted. Cinematographer Dariusz Wolski will again drop your jaw and interestingly enough, he is going head to head against himself this week as he is also the DP on Zemeckis' THE WALK - another 3D movie that just opened!

As you can see, I haven't rated anything to do with this movie below a 9/10. I think that's a first for me. Usually there is some glaring flaw somewhere in a production that I must comment on, but sincerely the only thing I can say that may not be taken as a compliment is that the movie veered from the novel. But of course it will - it's a slightly more than 2 hour movie and will indeed have its own version. However, even this point is not all that negative to me at all. In what is a rare occurrence for me, I found myself thinking "Oh wow - I truly don't know where he is going with this" adding a level of suspense I didn't think possible after reading a movie's novel before seeing the film, rather than think that the movie is ruining the original story. Far from it. Both are standalone and wonderful. So even if you have read the best selling book - go see this movie!

The character development and story are breathtaking. Of course it centers on Watney (Matt Damon) and within you see a carefully crafted evolution of the man. Realization, self-deprecation, humor, despair, hope, joy, fear, achievement. The journey is long, yet concise. A perfect balance; something you definitely need when the story itself takes YEARS to tell and yet still flows much better than I ever thought possible.

It's a rousing couple of hours that will keep you entertained, thrill you and challenge you to think.

The movie's 3D was exceptional and solid. Most of the movie was shot in native 3D (as per the Ridley Scott norm) by stereographer Gareth Daley using our friends at 3ality's 3D rigs and expertise, and it shows. Gareth nailed it! I've got to watch it again just to see what I've missed because at times there is much to take in. See it on the largest 3D screen possible in your area and with the best sound. The experience will blow you away.

Damon delivered a solid Watney. Personally I would have cast someone else, probably someone younger perhaps Aaron Paul - but let me reassure you that Damon is believable and enjoyable in this role. At no time did I think "I don't believe this" or that the character doesn't work. Exact opposite in fact. Most audiences will still have in their mind GOOD WILL HUNTING and how brilliantly Damon played a genius. Same applies here. I just felt the role would be better served by a younger actor. That is it.

So I won't go into more details and ruin any element of the movie for you, but again, I seldom give 9's and above across the board. Check it out - it's worth your hard earned money and DEFINITELY see it in 3D.

Check out the first clip from Ridley Scott's THE MARTIAN from 20th Century Fox. The movie stars Matt Damon as astronaut Mark Watney based on the best selling novel from Andy Weir (an excellent read by the way).

The clip is reserved in that it doesn't give much away in regards to plot or characters, but definitely sets up a story based in real science and an expectation that it's believable. The crew has a great dynamic too. Ridley Scott is known for these traits and so my excitement for the movie is off the charts.

Oh man - can't wait for this movie to touchdown. Matt Damon stars in director Ridley Scott's native 3D return to space and it looks like all systems go for a great movie here. The story should be amazing as I've read the book and hopefully they don't stray too far from the original material. It seems they aren't - Damon's character even uses the same terminology that's found in the book: "Here's the rub...".

I think Ridley is going to knock this one out of the park. Hopefully there's ample momentum here for his PROMETHEUS 2 afterward! 3ality Technica is behind the rigs for the production so you know the 3D in this movie will be jawdropping.

MUST WATCH: First Trailer And Intro Clip for Matt Damon's THE MARTIAN

I've read the book guys and this trailer seems to indicate that the original story is fairly intact and that is great news, because the book rocked. And it's directed by Ridley Scott - so there's THAT.

Watch the trailer - this is a huge personal survival story in the harshest of climates - Mars. The additional video clip introduces the crew of the Hermes to us in an affable manner as well - so far the marketing for the movie has been intelligent and at a human level; perfect for the story. Trust me, if they keep to the book (and they should, it was a best seller), then this movie will definitely take off.

Opinion

Exodus: Gods and Kings is a huge disappointment. This story, which has been told and retold for thousands of years, deserved something better than this. And it really means a lot coming from an atheist. Ridley Scott brought to the screen his own interpretation of the Bible, and is it good? No, it isn't. $140 Million probably spent for special effects, costumes and a cast full of stars, but surely not on the script. I was expecting a spectacular Red Sea parting, but there is no trace of it. It is a mystery how Scott did such a poor movie.

Christian Bale is mediocre, delivering an emotionless performance - I wasn't expecting this from him at all. Joel Edgerton is surprisingly good.

Janet Maslin of The New York Times had only praise for the film in her review and so do I. Thelma & Louise is Ridley Scott's masterpiece. This road movie is outstanding and timeless.

The screenplay - written by Callie Khouri and Academy Award winner for Best Original Screenplay - the director and the cast are brilliant.

Thelma & Louise is a story that blends several themes: family life, friendship and freedom. The desire and the right to be free, as seen at the end of the film, seems to be the most important.

Ridley Scott's THE FOREVER WAR Back To The Front Lines!

Yes! Ridley Scott is apparently still pushing forward with his adaptation of Joe Haldeman's THE FOREVER WAR and has inked Dante (D.W.) Harper (ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS) to adapt it for him.

No word on whether Harper was the original person that Scott hired to adapt the book or not. We knew someone was working on just that way back in 2009 (obviously before his 3D PROMETHEUS) when he said:

"I'm filming a book by Joe Haldeman called Forever War. I've got a good writer doing it. I've seen some of James Cameron's work, and I've got to go 3D. It's going to be phenomenal."

I'm just glad that this project hasn't gotten back-burnered with all of Scott's other projects on the go, like THE COUNSELOR, PROMETHEUS 2 and BLADE RUNNER 2. I have to underscore that the potential of this project is immense and easily could fall in line with Scott's other sci-fi classics.

I'm not kidding. This could be his finest hour in science fiction; the story is that good. More when we get it! Thanks for the heads up Adam...

An AVATAR 2 Vs. PROMETHEUS 2 Showdown In 2015 Is Shaping Up!

Wow. 2015 looks like it could be a massive year for Sci-Fi enthusiasts! We already have news that AVATAR 2 is heading toward a 2015 release but could we see a second Fox Sc-Fi tentpole sequel the same year in Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS 2?

It seems so. THR has word that Fox and Ridley Scott is actively engaged in developing the project. Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are already signed on with a multi-picture option deal but it seems that Damon Lindelof may not return due to scheduling conflicts (or fan outcry as the case may be). Many did not like the storyline for PROMETHEUS and thus could have prompted the search for another writer.

2014 or 2015 seem to be the likely candidate years for a sequel release and with the "Can't rush" attitude that the Fox executives have (a GOOD thing) and the writer vacancy, 2015 looks a bit more likely.

What do you think? Could you handle a double shot of Sci-Fi legends one upping each other in 2015? I think I know the answer to that... :-)

Prometheus 3D Tricks Revealed in Latest American Cinematographer Magazine

Hey everyone, Tim here with some interesting news out of the latest edition of American Cinematographer Magazine. This is a great magazine for any would-be filmmakers out there, and is a great magazine for filmmakers. I've been hooked on it since college where Drexel University provided Film & Video students with copies for free. The writers get in-depth interviews with the cinematographer, director, gaffer, and all other crew members.

This month's issue got to talk with Dariusz Wolski, ASC, the cinematographer of Ridley Scott's Prometheus. We already knew that they shot on the RED Epic with 3ality Technica Rigs, but now we get a little more information.

Wolski shot all four Pirates of the Caribbean movies, including the 3D On Stranger Tides. He had to say of the location they shot for the alien planet, "Iceland is phenomenal. It had daylight for 20 hours a day when we were there, and the sun was always low and beautiful. If it was cloudy, it was also stunning. It’s an amazing place to shoot — and I’ve shot four Pirates of the Caribbean movies in the tropics, so I know the difference!"

Although he shot Prometheus at the 5K resolution of the RED Epic, with a 5:1 compression (occasionally switching to 3:1 for fine detail scenes) Wolski revealed that the original photography had to be converted to 2K in post in order to match the visual-effects resolution. Wolski noted, "On a movie with this many visual effects, going to 4K would have quadrupled the visual-effects budget." He went on to say that with 4K projectors now available that we'll be able to shoot in 5K, do visual effects and post in 4K, and project in 4K to make it as good as IMAX.

This was Ridley Scott's first foray into shooting digital. Scott had this to say about the RED Epic, "I really love the picture quality of the Red. But when you have that kind of clarity, it’s very easy for your lighting to become harsh, so you definitely have to pay attention to that." He sums up with "I think Prometheus is a pretty good showcase for Red. Dariusz made it look absolutely beautiful in both 2D and 3D."

With regards to the the switch from 2D to 3D Scott said, "If you’re used to shooting, there is no goddamn difference between 2D and 3D — you’ve either got an eye, or you haven’t. And if you’re a director who hasn’t got an eye, you’d better make sure your cameraman does!"

Lens choice wise, Scott and Wolski chose spherical over anamorphic, which is the hallmark style of Alien. When asked about the difference Scott had this to say, "I do like anamorphic, but spherical is a much better enabler — I like the sharpness. I have a great preference for spherical now, unless I’m really going to go for that shallow-focus look." And Wolski chose to shoot most of Prometheus on Angenieux Optimo zooms, as he explains "In 3D, lens changes are complex, and re-aligning the cameras is time-consuming. Ridley likes to move fast, and he likes to use multiple cameras, so I decided on four main rigs: two with 15-40mm Optimos, and two with 28-76mm Optimos. We also used a Steadicam rig with Zeiss Ultra Primes, which shaved the weight as much as possible. I think the short Optimo zoom is the most revolutionary lens in the industry right now. You can shoot a whole movie with two zoom lenses!"

Scott's multi-camera technique has been a hallmark of his sets since Gladiator and he especially loves them for dialogue scenes, not just action sequences. It is because of multiple cameras that he was able to shoot Prometheus in 82-days. That's an incredible amount of time to shoot such an effects heavy movie as Prometheus.

Lighting is as important to how the image is captured as the camera and lenses, and Wolski had his work cut out for him on that front. He states that "This film lent itself to using modern lighting, and we designed the spaceship with a lot of LEDs controlled by very complex dimmer boards." Wolski chose a consistent setting of 4,000˙K on the Epic, which lent to the color scheme inside the ship and for the exteriors nicely. What you got was an interior distinguished by a rich variety of blues, greens, and yellows, and an exterior that felt slightly cool.

Gaffer Perry Evans, whose uncle Ray Evans was gaffer on Alien, recalls that Scott asked for the ship's lighting to be dynamic in order to interact with the actors's performances, "Once Ridley saw that we could play with the lights, he pushed it to the limit. He’d say, ‘When he walks in the room, bring those lights up, and when he touches this desk, switch those things on.’ I don’t recall doing a single shot on the spaceship without a light change. I must admit, Ridley put us through our paces. There was never a dull moment!" The filmmakers used 200 "off the shelf" industrial fluorescents, which were outfitted with dimming electronics. Evans added that the dimming board could be remotely controlled with an iPad on the set.

Now the stereographer, James Goldman, who also worked with Wolski on the 3D Pirates, explained that Prometheus was primarily shot parallel and that the convergence was accomplished in post. His reasoning is that shooting parallel facilitates visual-effects work because the artists don't have to compensate for keystoning of toed-in, converging cameras. Goldman would monitor the stereo image on 3ality Technica's Stereo Image Processor, and Brainstorm's Qtake was used to create a converged 3D image for the filmmakers to view on set.

Goldman supervised the changes in IO (interocular distance) in coordination with Scott and Wolski. He notes that Scott favored a big IO with more depth, but that he saved extreme 3-D effects, like jutting foregrounds, “for the big moments when he wanted people to jump out of their chairs.” In general, he continues, Scott “adjusted his style to 3D and tended to put less in the foreground than he usually does.”

Ryan Nguyen was Prometheus's digital-image technician, and on set he monitored the images at a station next to Wolski, who set color "in camera." Jeroen Hendriks, camera-data supervisor, prepared the files for editorial at an off-set station. As Wolski explains, "We did everything in-house. Downloads from camera went to Jeroen’s station, and then the image went straight to editorial and stayed there all the way to the final color correction, which was actually minimal." Wolski chose a 24" Sony monitor as the absolute image reference on the set. Hendriks explains that each take’s settings were saved in a Red MetaData file that accompanied the footage through the workflow. “Ridley loved what we saw on the monitor,” notes Wolski. “He said, ‘This is it. Don’t mess with it.’”

Richard Stammers, visual-effects supervisor defined a window of 4,800x2,000 pixels in the 5K image to create the 2.39:1 widescreen frame, leaving 100 pixels on either side to allow for convergence adjustments and some vertical room for reframing. After Hendriks and his crew cloned the 5K originals, they used RedCine-X software to verify the RMD file, and then defined a convergence setting for each take (as provided by Goldman). This metadata was then sent via Skype to the off-set station, where color-corrected and converged 3D dailies were created for the editors. The final 3D convergence was accomplished toward the end of post during a convergence run, in tandem with the final grade.

And that is how the 3D cinematography was accomplished for Prometheus. Very interesting stuff. Looking back, Scott offers his final thoughts about Prometheus: “Working with Dariusz was absolutely marvelous. It was fun to revisit science fiction, an old genre, and he and his crew made the whole thing a great ride!”

PROMETHEUS Review! Spoiler Free - 9 Stars!! The Best 3D I Have Ever Witnessed!

This review is SPOILER FREE. However, the comments section is fair game and you can expect spoilers in there - so be warned!

Ridley Scott has delivered again. He visionary take on science fiction in PROMETHEUS had me thinking about science like a child again. It takes magic to pull that off on an adult and I like to think of myself as one now and then! The movie is so good it will trigger your own deep thoughts and for that reason alone it deserves 9 stars.

PROMETHEUS was shot in native 3D with 3ality Technica 3D rigs housing Red Epic digital cameras and the results were extraordinary! See it for yourself. These technology companies are at the top of their game and the quality of this theatrical product is simply BEYOND. And with digital theatrical screenings you will have artifact and dust free exhibitions each and every time.

The trademark darkness of the ALIEN franchise was NOT an issue in 3D - not in the way Ridley Scott shot it. They shot with higher light levels and then dialed in the darkness when and where they wanted it in post-production, walking hand in hand with the stereoscopic 3D. Heck, even Roger Ebert liked the movie AND the 3D!

PROMETHEUS has the best 3D I have EVER seen in the theater. You can take that to the bank folks. I recommend the largest screen you can possibly see it on and SEE IT IN 3D.

You may read other reviews on other movie sites that were disappointed in the movie - for what, I have no, strike that, I have ABSOLUTELY no idea why. Seriously, if we didn't live in a free world where it is ok to have your own opinion, they should be summarily drummed out of the Internet. But alas, some critics can voice their opinion with little or no basis to back it up. If a movie leaves you thinking about it after you leave - and ESPECIALLY if you're thinking about it the next day, it has done it's job well. PROMETHEUS is that movie.

PROMETHEUS is VISUALLY STUNNING. Easily the best of the year thus far for pure visuals. Ridley Scott and cinematographer Dariusz Wolski tag teamed to conceive, shoot and edit together breathtaking visuals that will leave you wanting to see it again and again just to relive it.

And let me say a word about the sheer brilliance exhibited by the visual effects teams led by Moving Picture Company and Weta Digital. SPECTACULAR!!!!!!! I need more exclamation points. Seriously I FELT like an android myself discovering things for the first time. To have a movie rekindle emotions like that  - that haven't been moved since AVATAR, hats off to all the visual effects artists that contributed to this event movie. Your names are now forever connected to the movie in infamy.

I can't discuss the individual points of my review here as I normally do as they would include spoilers but feel free to ask anything you like in the comments!

Why not 10 out of 10? Well, it has to be perfect to get that score and I have yet to see a movie that deserves it. PROMETHEUS has some issues but nothing to remotely consider panning the film. The characters should have been explored for another 15 minutes or so before seeing action - kinda like the original ALIEN. Michael Fassbender's David did however, enjoy some great development and he really carried the movie as far as the actor's performances are concerned.

I saw the movie in IMAX 3D at Empire Theatres. Thank you for the exceptional screening Empire! I will also be checking it out in RealD 3D as well asap. PROMETHEUS is now playing in North America - if you only see one sci-fi movie this year, treat yourself and go see it!

Hello. Ridley Scott Describes A Scene From The Upcoming BLADE RUNNER Sequel

This man is awesome. Ridley Scott knows what to say to get the BLADE RUNNER fanboys jumping and this interview with Collider is no exception. Ridley fills us in on a visual for a scene he has floating around in his head for the planned sequel and I love it.

Again, I am counting on Ridley's affinity for 3D to make this sequel in three dimensions! No official word on this yet.

Thou Shalt Shoot Movies In 3D: Ridley Scott Working On MOSES

Wow. Ridley Scott let it slip to Esquire magazine that he is already working on his next project of biblical proportions entitled MOSES. The movie and PROMETHEUS are obviously not related, although there seems to be obvious religious overtones to both movies.

The question of 3D was not raised unfortunately so nothing is certain - except that Ridley favors the format, so my fingers are crossed. 

The Esquire magazine interview actually sounded as though the interviewer had prior knowledge of his production slate as he was asking very leading questions...

Ridley Scott (RS): Can you think of a good one? A just and kind and tolerant religion? 

Esquire (ES): Not off the top of my head, no.

RS: Everyone is tearing each other apart in the name of their personal god. And the irony is, by definition, they're probably worshipping the same god.

ES: You know what would be awesome? You need to make a film adaptation of a Bible story.

RS: Oh, yeah.

ES: Maybe the Virgin birth? No movie's ever told that story with enough gloopy, viscous afterbirth.

RS: No, I've got something else in the works. I'm already doing it. It's called Moses.

ES: You're kidding.

RS: Seriously, seriously. It's going to happen.

ES: With all apologies to Charlton Heston, that sounds like it's going to be the most amazing film about Moses ever made.

RS: It is. I probably shouldn't have let that slip out. I'm not supposed to say anything.

ES: Who am I going to tell?

RS: It's definitely in the cards, though. What's interesting to me about Moses isn't the big stuff that everybody knows. It's things like his relationship with Ramses [II, the pharaoh]. I honestly wasn't paying attention in school when I was told the story of Moses. Some of the details of his life are extraordinary.

I'm definitely down for another period piece from Ridley! I wonder what he has in store? Interesting!

STILL Not Convinced? Check Out These FOUR New Clips From PROMETHEUS!! **SPOILERS**

Four more movie clips for you to enjoy (or not for you spoiler phobic readers!) of Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS. The clips are entitled: "Don't touch Anything", "Can't Let It Leave", "Before The Adventure" and "We Made You Because We Could".

I've heard through the grapevine that PROMETHEUS' 3D is done EXTREMELY well. As it should be with Ridley Scott, Red Epics and 3ality Technica working together to deliver the goods. So I can't wait for that.

I wasn't invited to the London premiere as some of you have mentioned, but I promise that we're working on something special with Fox and hopefully it comes to fruition. Can't say what yet, but I'll be consoled if it does!

PROMETHEUS Setting Box Office Records Already! *AND* Learn About The Awesome Tech Behind The Movie!!

Of course it is going to do well at the box office, you can take that for granted. But just how well will it do? From the first indicators - VERY well. PROMETHEUS has eclipsed AVATAR and HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 in pre-sales at the BFI IMAX theater in London. That means that over 30,000 people have bought advance tickets to the tune of $737,588 from ONE theater.

BFI had booked 18,287 tickets after just one week of sales ($474,687) which set a new high for them in pre-sales, and now the records just keep falling to PROMETHEUS as time rolls along toward its release date.

Here's the storyline for the movie:

With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. 

Can this ONE theater hit $1 million in pre-sales before the release of the movie on June 8th? Sure is nice to think so.

*AND*

PROMETHEUS has over 1400 3D visual effects shots. They used software programs like Autodesk's Maya (3D animation), Pixar's Renderman (ray-traced scenes), Adobe AfterEffects (for well, after effects!) and The Foundry's NUKE (compositing) to name several.

Ten different VFX companies tackled the work, though Moving Picture Company garnered the most. To me, this is very exciting. I have often found various effects houses to have their "brand" all over their work - like in TRANSFORMERS I found ILM to have ample superiority over hard edged robots and buildings while a company like Weta Digital has the finest control over rounded creatures like humans and faces in particular. Combine them and you have one heckuva effects movie. It's exciting to me to see another visual effects house getting the bulk of the work because we may see things we've never seen before! Not that these guys haven't been around for awhile - they have. They've worked and are working on movies like CLASH OF THE TITANS, SKYFALL, SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL, WORLD WAR Z, 47 RONIN, LIFE OF PI, etc. But let's face it, they were chosen as the led effects shops over ILM and Weta and it should look slightly different and exciting. I saw things in TITANS for example that blew my mind! Can't wait!!

Ridley Scott used Red Epic cameras on 3ality Technica Atom rigs. He had four mounted rigs (with the same configurations) and one steadicam for the bulk of the shoot. The consistent configurations of the mounted rigs eased editing a great deal.

The cameras were all connected to 3ality's Stereo Image Processors (SIPs) for the recording of all the data bursting forth from those VERY high resolution cameras. The SIPs also helped maintain speedy transitions when lens needed to be changed or cameras realigned. The technology goes further by offering advice on the fly to the filmmakers on convergence (creating a single image from two different camera image angles converged on the same point in space), interaxial (the distance between the two camera's lenses - like our eyes) settings and any alerts.

These settings are EXTREMELY important for a comfortable viewing experience. The settings must be correct during transitions or it will be quite jarring to the audience. Those SIPs track these configurations and help eliminate any transition issues.

The PROMETHEUS team actually shot far more resolution than what was necessary for the final 2K product. In fact they shot at 5K and 120 frames per second! They used the extra space surrounding the final viewable product to assist in eliminating edge artifacts (as shown in the image).

The idea and thrust behind the PROMETHEUS technology was to get the 3D workflow as close to 2D and from the sound of this fine report that was accomplished. 3ality Technica's tech allows for the same number of 3D setups in a shooting day as 2D. There is no real excuse now in saying that 3D is slower because you are setting up 2 cameras, not 1. There is no longer an excuse that the 3D cameras and rigs are too big - they aren't now!

The new technology here eliminates these things from the equation and gives time back to the filmmaker to be as creative as they can be and not worry about the optics. PROMETHEUS is set to fully enjoy the reaction from audiences worldwide on what they have accomplished.

TWO More Featurettes For PROMETHEUS!!

It isn't going to stop guys! More to tantalize you about the upcoming return to the ALIEN universe by Ridley Scott. We have two more PROMETHEUS featurettes for you, one focusing on 3D and shooting the movie and the second featuring actor Logan Marshall-Green.

I'm going to say that there are spoilers in these because I can't be sure how much you have seen individually at this point and what you haven't seen. If you watch them - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Love the behind the scenes looks with the 3ality Technica rigs and Red Epic cameras in the first featurette. You can tell that the visuals in this movie are going to be probably the best ever captured thus far just based on technology advances alone. We are in for a serious, serious treat here as we are with THE HOBBIT and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Gotta love this statement heard in the second featurette from Marshall-Green: "There's gonna be a lot of expectations... We're going to meet all those expectations." Wow. Powerful statement indeed. I'm getting a Tom hardy vibe from Marshall-Green a bit, are you?

Ridley Scott On 3D Conversion And Michael Bay

I have to say Quint over at AICN got some very interesting 3D news out of Sir Ridley Scott in a short 6 minutes about his upcoming prequel to ALIEN. My hat goes off to him! :-)

As you know, Scott is shooting his ALIEN prequels in native 3D.

So lets go into the details from the interview. Ridley Scott is an advocate of 3D conversion - good conversion obviously. Scott says: "I’ve heard now that audiences object if it’s not purely 3D, if it’s 2D to 3D. I could show you 2D to 3D and you wouldn’t know the difference. But when they’re told it’s 2D to 3D they say, “Fuck that, man! I’m paying another four dollars…” It’s about money, of course, but you’re still paying for the effect. Really, it’s very close. 2D to 3D is awfully close."

Quint is NOT speaking for all of us though, when he tells Scott that there are technical limitations of filming a movie in 3D - specifically lighting. Scott's reply? Hogwash. And it is true. If you tackle it correctly (as Scott is doing - he will be capturing as much digital information as possible and tackling lighting in post), then you have nothing to fear.

Here is some more good news from Scott: Michael Bay is indeed shooting TRANSFORMERS 3 in native 3D! Here is his comment which I construe as being that Bay is filming in native: "I was told it was going to slow us down… it didn’t slow (Michael) Bay down. Bay is moving like lightning. Once he realized, “Oh, Jesus… there’s no difference, really. Except I’m adding dimension.”

Personally I would have asked about the cameras Scott is using and what stereoscopic team, if any, is he bringing on board to assist, etc. But hey, it wasn't my interview. Glad he got in what he got in.

Ridley Scott May be Partnering With OR BUYING His Own S3D Company!

Huge news here guys from New York magazine if it comes to fruition! Sir Ridley Scott is apparently in deep negotiations to become partners with Symphony 3D which happens to be the parent company of MasterImage. If you will remember, I am very bullish on MasterImage and love their 3D projection solution and products.

Seems Scott will be renaming the venture Scott Three Productions (his current shingle is called Scott Free Productions) so it seems he will be taking a very active role - perhaps owning it outright! Now there is an obvious difference between running a 3D projection company and a production house, so I have a well placed email in to a person in the know to get the lowdown on how it all looks.

The combination of a strategically placed 3D company in the hands of one of the masters of our time is a perfect combination for this new generation of filmmaking! I can feel the energy and excitement pulsing within the Scott camp lately - can you feel it? 3D is playing a huge role in this renaissance; I am ecstatic that Ridley Scott is front and center!!
