55th Cinema Audio Society Awards Winners

Last Saturday night the society had their awards ceremony with some surprises, especially in the animation category as group honored a film forgotten this awards season, Isle of Dogs.

Bohemian Rhapsody win comes as no surprise for me; but, as many do, wonder if Academy members will honor film with an Oscar as even do film is a crowd pleaser, it might have too-much negative baggage.

Yesterday the society announced the nominees for the current edition of their annual awards that honor Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing.  The award is given in seven categories and they also announced the Outstanding Product nominations.

“It is always my distinct pleasure to congratulate our colleagues on their stellar work. This year the creativity of our community is front and center with exceptional projects that represent the finest in sound mixing for 2018”.  said CAS President Mark Ulano.

This is the second industry group that does not nominate Roma and in this category believe is a huge omission as sound is an essential element in this film and I can even call it a protagonist that conducts the story. Know this tech category does not include music and/or songs but when you add those two elements to sound the end-result in Roma is outstanding.  Well, hope Oscars recognize the role of sound in Roma but then most Academics are also members of this group.  Sigh.  I know I'm becoming annoyingly repetitive but yes, ALL awards should go this year to Roma -lol.

In six of the past 10 years, the winner of the feature category went on to win the Oscar in sound mixing; that was the case a year ago when Dunkirk won the both awards.  Let's see what happens but hope Roma will have an Oscar nomination.

Steven Spielberg will receive the CAS Filmmaker Award and production sound mixer Lee Orloff will receive the Career Achievement Award.

To check nominees in all categories, including TV and others,  go official site here. The Awards will be presented at a sealed envelope dinner on February 16 in the Wilshire Grand Ballroom of the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.

During the awards the highest honor of the CAS, the CAS Career Achievement Award, will be presented to Production Sound Mixer Lee Orloff, CAS, the CAS Filmmaker Award will be presented to Steven Spielberg. The Student Recognition Award winner will also be named. On the evening of the Awards, the Cinema Audio Society website will be updated in real time as the winners are announced.
