65th Berlin International Film Festival Award Winners

In less than an hour the awards ceremony will start and right now is the last red carpet of Berlinale 2015, the red carpet for the Award Ceremony of the 65th Berlinale.

Watching red carptet and getting excited with some of the people that are still in Berlin, including complete cast of Ixcanul, Body and more ...

So everyone that walked the Red Carpet got an award, which you know it doesn't happen in Cannes (they make them walk the back door) as takes off some of the excitement.  Well, we knew which films were going to win but at least had no idea what they will win.

My first spontaneous impression to 2015 Berlinale is that belongs to Latin American Cinema and particularly to Chile that won so many awards in this edition, but also Uruguay, Brazil, Mexico and -most positively surprising- Guatemala collected top awards. Most interesting is to find in social media the many congratulations to Darren Aronofsky for awarding prizes to excellent films!  Yes, sometimes jury awards seem to be biased, but this Berlinale really gave top awards to great films that had good buzz during the whole festival.

Today we started the very long post with all the 2015 Berlinale awards. Post will be In Progress until after the awards ceremony.

Talking about award winners let me share what I think could happen tomorrow. Perhaps what I have most clear is about the front-runners for the Best Actress Silver Bear as there are two quite known, Alba Rohrwacher in Sworn Virgin and Charlotte Rampling in 45 Years; but also there is some buzz and speculation that an unknown could win the award .

What really called my attention is which films are being considered for the Golden Bear. If we consider what Neil Young's call Golden Bear Odds, then we see that up to today February 12 the two films that have better odds are Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups and Pablo Larraín’s The Club.  Believe the first gets the better odds mostly because who is the Jury President and not necessarily because all the fuzz and buzz that surrounds the festival.  Seems Aronofsky has mentioned Malick as his influence, especially when he did some of his earlier films, so assume that everyone knows the influence the jury president has among his peers and expect a predictable reaction to what is familiar for him.

But we know better. Film festivals top award winners are mostly unpredictable as usually jury members are eclectic and this year Berlinale jury is as eclectic as can bee with Aronofsky style, most interesting Bong Joon-ho particular style and the very magical style of Claudia Llosa.  So, who knows what could happen when you have three very strong directors in one jury.

Up to this moment when most of the collateral awards have been announced the BIG winner absolutely is Latin American cinema as films from Chile, Uruguay and Brazil have win several awards and swept the Teddy's.

Was checking the FIPRESCI scores and according to film critics the most probable Golden Bear winner is Taxi with a score of 3.67; but very close also are The Club (3.53) and Aferim! (3.50) followed by -above 3 score- 45 Years (3.44), Sworn Virgin (3.38), Ixcanul (3.29), and Body (3.15).
