Plot
As Loki (Tom Hiddleston) comes to Earth to retrieve the Tesseract and subjugate the human race, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster: the Avengers, featuring Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).
Opinion
The Avengers is maybe the best comic book-film ever. The action is certainly not lacking, there are lots of explosions and it is plenty of fun. The special effects are impressive.
The film is mostly focused on the characters; in fact none of them is ignored and they are consistent with what has been seen in previous films: Steve Rogers / Captain American still acts as a soldier, Tony Stark is brilliant as usual, Loki is still evil. Nick Fury is finally more than the guy making appearances, and Agent Coulson returns.
The cast is great: Tom Hiddleston's Loki is amazingly scary. I was missing Edward Norton, but I gotta say Mark Ruffalo isn't that bad after all.
